Quarter at 4 inches only

Waterdog

Well-known member
I went out the other day with some friends, Set up in Deus fast. I was out swinging away and got a real faint signal. At about four inches I find this quarter. Operator error ? or is this what I can expect from a Xp Deus with a 11 inch coil? Can this thing go deeper ?

Depends on lots of conditions not the least of which is the soil type. I find the ID and signals drop off significantly in bad ground as you raise the frequency and lower the moisture level in highly mineralized ground. I was detecting a soccer field the other day with a friend using a MXT and 5" quarters sounded boldly to him and were but a faint whisper to the Deus in 18 khz with higher reactivity and silencer settings. It's not a turn on and go detector like a Minelab but requires tweaking at each site to get decent performance. The next time you get a similar signal , play with the settings , especially reactivity and silencer , and I think you will get better depth or at least better ID.

There could be many reasons for the faint hit on the quarter. What type of ground were you hunting in, mild, moderate, bad? What were your settings? Since the quarter was only 4 inches what was showing on the horseshoe as far as ID and depth?

No need to hunt in 18 in the USA your just asking for chatter. What I'm giving you here is very deep. Try it. Really try it. Almost no situation that I would hunt one of the stock programs in the USA.

CT Todd Program

Frequency 8
Discrimination 8
Iron Volume 2
Reactivity 1 or 2 watch sweep speed. Mostly 1 set program at 1
Silencer 0
Sensitivity 88-93 mostly 90-93
Set program at 93
TX power 3 Mostly 3 but if things get chatty go to 2 Set program at 3
4 Tones personal choices on break points
Audio Response 3
GB Manual use Tracking to get a reading then switch to manual
Notch 8-35 98-99
Ground Notch 70-90

Things to remember
When you move the Reactivity
It will change the silencer setting.

Tracking is a nice lazy GB setting. To get the most out of your unit use manual GB and pay attention to it. Using a + or - bias on GB can help. All ground is different. Find your way.

I agree with CT TODD no where in the U.S would I use a factory program. I use a heavy trash program and it will hit a quarter at 7 or 8 inch but my deep relic program can hit one up to a foot. The factory programs restrict the machine learn to program it or you will not be happy imo. Got a friend who bought one then sold BECAUSE he did not learn to program it and tested it in his test garden and found it lacking on depth etc. He bought another one and I programed it for him and now its his go to machine,he was amazed at the difference in performance. Your audio responce is gonna play a part in how DEEP targets sound too.

This is a great video for anyone new to the Deus in explaining how the different settings affect the depth on coin size targets.

I have 4 programs saved. 2 of them are for hunting in my iron infested logging camps and ghost towns. The other two are for general hunting for deep coins in cleaner ground. Both are very close to CT Todd's and Calabash's programs with some miner tweaks.
