Quarters at 44 VDI on XTerra 305?

On the XTerra 305, 44 is usually large aluminium junk such as can lids or cans, but large dollar and half dollar coins also ring up 44. In hindsight I am also thinking that quarters are popping up at 44 in addition to the 40 that they are supposed to show up as, which would explain why I am finding proportionally more quarters now that I have an E-Trac, which separates all those targets between 46 and 50 nicely, with quarters being 12-46, 12-47, and the junk being 12-48 to 12-50.

On my Xterra 505 quarters usually show up as a 42, but not always. I believe it has to do with the amount of copper/silver in each. I don't think each one is exactly the same. Same thing for pennies which show as 30, 33, or 36. As Randy says, you never know until you dig it.

I have not looked at the tid's a lot I just set my 705 to 99 tones and if it's a solid tone I dig, after four hunts my ears have honed in on those quarters, dimes, pull tabs and nickels.

As noted in the coin charts, the X-TERRA TID numbers were acquired with the coin "flat", using the stock coil, via air tests. Results may vary due to ground conditions, target depth, "angle" of the target and accuracy of settings. When you are hunting in the field, there are too many variables to suggest any one TID number is going to represent a specific target, 100% of the time. With that in mind, the E-TRAC has 35 ferrous TID numbers and 50 conductive TID numbers. Combined, this makes for 1750 different "notch" combinations. In other words, the E-TRAC has the capacity to categorize any given target into one of those 1750 locations or one of those 1750 different "notch segments". Your 305 had 12 notch segments. One of them indicates ferrous targets (-4) and the other 11 categorized the target according to its non-ferrous properties (+4 through +44). Every metal target you sweep over using the 305 is going to be categorized into one of those 12 notch locations. Having the ability to ID a target with one of 1750 different ferrous/conductive combinations on the E-TRAC, compared to having 12 notch segments on the 305, its no wonder the E-TRAC would allow you to identify quarters with more accuracy. That doesn't mean the 305 won't find them. It does and it registers the TID that most closely matches the information provided from the receive circuit of the coil. Whether or not you dig only the TIDs of 40 and leave the TID 44's is entirely up to you. JMHO HH Randy

Air testing they all come up the same so I would venture to say it depends on how the quarter is oriented in the soil, flat or tilted, what other junk is nearby, and mineralization in the soil.

Just wondering if anyone has dug a 44 and gotten a quarter and if it is common. I know I had one shift between 40 and 44.

If I get a 44 on my 305 unit I immediately go to all metal and sweep it from 2 sides. If I get a ker-plunk sound I know it is a bottle cap. Have not had very many quarters run in at 44.

We don't have quarters here in Australia, however, apart from adjacent targets, there are 2 things that can make your numbers go up on coins. If it is on edge, or if you have several together. the mass seems to push the numbers up.

Not sure what coil your using but when I'm using the 10.5 HF I do get Quarters that TID at 44 on the 705

I have the 705 Gold DD HF and clad quarters usually are 42...clad dimes 38 silver dimes 38-40 newer pennies 32-38 Indian pennies (pretty corroded) 30-32 newer nickles 10-12 usually 12 No gold anything yet but my 14K wedding band is 24 when its flat with double beep and 22-24 when tilted. I always dig any solid number 10-12 or 30-46 and am starting to dig any solid number 22-28 for gold.

Thanks great advice! I didn't learn to use my ears until I got the etrac. I always thought everything sounded the same on the 305. I think I am tone def and the etrac gives you better audio information, as it should.
