thanks for the feed back also got an email from des in irland said helped build the quattro .he said the same thing try 15 or 16 on sens i did and did not help ... found anew problem..manual says when turn it on it starts in default mode (coin) mine does not it will start in what ever mode you were in last ..sound like something might be ?

I don't own a quattro...but if it's anything like the explorer...it will only start in "coin mode" when you first turn on the detector for the very first time...OR if you were in that mode last before you turned it off. I believe it probably starts in whatever mode you were in last intentionally...

Don,
Do you have the manual? Have you read the whole thing? If not, you really need to. And you need the Andy Sabisch book "Mastering The Minelab Quattro". What you are saying is incorrect. The Quattro will start up in whatever mode it was in the last time you used it.
If you look at your manual, on page p12, paragraph 7.1, it says the following:
Press and release the power button to turn your detector on/off. On first time start-up, your detector will default to the COIN mode and you can begin detecting. When you turn your detector on following your first time use, the detector will start with the previous setting, from when the detector was last used.
Are you using the Noise Cancel as was suggested? Have you talked to your dealer? Did you get the new machine yet? You said it's being replaced due to a headphone jack problem, right? I would really just wait until you get the new machine. If the new one has the same problem, THEN I would worry.

Don,
To ensure you are starting for a know point, press and hold the POWER touchpad for about 10 seconds. Wait until you see the message "FACTORY PRESET" displayed and then release the touchpad.
Now go outside to an area where you know it is not littered with trash. Place the coil on the ground and press the NOISE CANCEL touchpad. WHen it completes the cycle, you are ready to go.
If you still get a lot of chatter, try lifting the coil off the ground and grab the coil at various spots around the edge. If you find it gets noisy, you may have a coil problem.
Try shaking the unit (not wildly) with the coil in the air and see if it falses.
Keep track of the results and then if it is still acting up, contact your local dealer or Minelab directly (702-891-8809) and talk to Dick in service. If needed, they will turn the unit around in short order but the steps listed above should take care of 95% of the possible problems.
