Question about ground mineralization

I'm fairly new to the Birmingham, Al area which is known for the high iron/mineralization of the ground. I normally run the CZ3D's GB at the 4.5-5 level and sens at 4 in Enhanced mode in the places I've detected here. Same for a CZ70 pro. Question is: Since the GB is generally set to the mid-range level does that mean the ground mineralization is moderate where I'm detecting? I'm thinking about purchasing another brand of detector to help deal with several places with high iron infestation (mostly nails). These's detectors come in models with and without manual GB. With moderate mineralization is manual GB needed? Any thoughts? HH Gary

And the answer is NO. It is a very common mis-conception to mistake the ground phase reading(where you set the GB knob/dial etc.)for the quantity of mineralization.

If I might a very poor analogy. You can take a thermometer and stick it in a pile of snow, and it will tell you the temperature of the snow (32F), which is akin to the GB setting on your detector. But it will not tell you how much, how deep the snow is. Wrong tool for the job, you need a ruler for that.

Some detectors have that capability, the CZ doesn't. Some that do, the White's GMT's, T2, F75, X-terra X70 etc.

HI Gary,

A better way to judge with the CZ's is how touchy the GB setting is. If a slight turn of the knob has a large effect on the audio response while bobbing it may be an indication of high mineralization.

Tom thanks for the info. Question: If it's determined that there may be a lot of mineralization, what should I be keeping in mind to maximize the CZ's capabilities? Generally I turn up the sens till it starts to false and back off one setting unless the area has a lot of iron trash, then I'll try backing the sens off from 0-4. Besides slowing down what else should be doing? Gary

But lets not feel to sorry for him. After all, he chose to live on the edge of an extinct volcano. Lake WannaPissoffke, is that how you pronounce it?
