Question about Headhunter Pi and GQ SS,

A

I think Mr.Bill may have answered this question with me on the phone a few weeks ago, Somehow I've heard two versions on this subject and mixed up the two.
Are the Headhunter pi coils and GQ SS coils interchangeable?
Thanks,
HH, Paul (Ca)

Yes your correct on the phone call.
The Goldquest will go to the HH OK, but not the HH to the Goldquest.
Mr. Bill

That's interesting, One works on the other while one doesn't work on one. However! That opens a window of opportunely, I do own a HH PI and will try out Eric's GQ SS 11" coil on the HH PI next week.
Thanks again Bill,
HH Pual (Ca)

Hi Paul,
The reason you can't swop them both ways is because the inductances are different. The Goldquest SS coil is less than the HHPI coil. The lower inductance on the SS is to enable it to work at 10uS. A lower inductance is OK on the HHPI, but a higher inductance will not allow the TX field to collapse fast enough to work on the SS. Unless that is, you turn the pulse delay (reject) control back to the 15uS point at least. The other factor is that the damping resistors are different, so you may run into a problem there, more likely with the HH coil on the SS.
Eric.

Hi Eric,
Yes, I found that out yesterday on the GQ SS, I mounded in a 15 usecond coil used for the HH PI and had to back up the delay to get the GQ SS to respond and lost the gold conductors. I'm glad to hear the GQ SS coil will work on the Headhunter Pi, I'm working on a project and will mount your 11" mono coil from the GQ SS onto a HH PI circuit board that should be arriving any day. It will be a different design Pi set-up. The circuit board and the controls will be mounted inside a sharp looking housing mounded above the hand grip, If the unit works well I'll go the extra step and water proof the housing and hard wire a waterproof headset instead of the regular headset I'll be using for the testing..
With your permission, may I post the unit on this forum when the projects completed.
Thanks Eric,
HH, Paul (Ca)

I must remind you that the coils for the GQ you have are no longer wired the same in the connector as they were when it was original. I would doubt that the wiring config will work now that both the GQ coil plug and the coil plug itself have been rewired.
There is a jumper across a couple of pins on the mono coil and I would not want to see you draw an overcurrent on your HH.

Scott
He would need to hard wire in the mono coil to the Head Hunter.
Bill

Hi Scott,
Yes, I've already seen how it's hooked up to work with the DD mod with the jumpers in place. I'll just have to remove the connector and hard wire the GQ SS cable to the HH PI. If the HH PI accepts the coil "meaning it works well in or out of the surf" I'll buy another 11" GQ SS from Mr. Bill for the GQ and mount back the DD coil connector.
The GQ SS you modified is operating very well here in California, It's a great unit for gold jewelry hunting.
