Question about keeping contacts clean on Excal battery pod...

I just got my 11 year old excal back from minelab completely refurbished and ready to go....How do some of you folks maintain the contacts on your battery pods? what do you clean them with after each water hunt? I mostly hunt the surf at the jersy shore. thanks in advance for your help.....Brian

Hi Brian,
I smear a healthy layer of "Vaseline" (a waterproof petrolium based jel) on both sides of the contacts. Every now and then I'll wipe the old jel off and give it a fresh coat and that's all you need to do.

Hey Brian, What all did Minelab do to your Excal, and if you don't mind saying, how much did they bill you? If you don't want to say, I'll understand.

I undo the connector after every hunt and rinse it with fresh water. I've never had any corrosion yet and I have one of the early models. ~John

I had my original seasearch coil replaced with a stock 10 inch coil and my battery plug assembly was also replaced....after pressure testing they had to replace another o-ring and added a couple of end caps. This ran me about $305.00 shipped back I then bought an inline balanced shaft "the Lightening rod" from Joe DeMarco Detector sales and a lower shaft to fit the new coil....this set me back another $133.00 shipped So for under $450.00 total I pretty much have a new machine....and I tested it on the beach and in the surf yesterday and it works great !!! Thanks to the guys at minelab in las vegas for the nice service....HH....Brian <img src="/metal/html/clap.gif" border=0 width=20 height=30 alt=":clap">

The only hesitations I have about vaseline are its tendency to disolve and degrade rubber and whether it reduces conductivity.
Vaseline does break down rubber pretty quickly. Over time it will eat away at and compromise the sealing ability of the rubber gasket in between the battery and connector. I wonder too if, over time, it will attack the plastic on the battery connector.
Vaseline may reduce conductivity. I don't know if it does but it might. Anyone know?
I think that a good quality silicone gel is a better idea than vaseline. It doesn't attack rubber and may be a better conductor than vaseline.

Many Thanks, Brian! I'm glad to hear that MINELAB did a great job servicing your red headphone model Excalibur! I just picked up a second one, now how (2) older models, and my original newer model. I just ordered a second Lightning Rod Shaft from Joe
for the older model that I just picked up. I really like his shafts, and have referred several people to him. It sounds like MINELAB really did a FINE JOB at a reasonable rate. Hope to see you at the SJMDC
Meeting Thurs. Nite. Best of luck with your newly refurbished machine.
P.S. I had my new model up for sale to one of my hunting partners. I took it and him to the beach on Sunday to show him how it works and WHALAA! Everything sounded fine, except it would not react to a coin on top of the sand! Bummer, I think its a broken coil wire (DAMM BBS COILS, I sure am glad that they came out with the newer SLIMLINE COILS!)
So, this week it's headed for Las Vegas, and I'm going to get a new 10" SLIMLINE Coil on it.
HH, thanks for responding, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker
