Question about the Explorer S

pratt

Member
Were dose the Explorer S fall in the explorer family? I tried to google it and dont come up with much? Is this a good unit, is it in the lines of the quattro? What would be the going rate for a vary clean little use unit.

S its like all the rest explorers, works the same just no screen light, noise cancel button- but you can noise cancel manually, and all the rest not needed things, buy and learn. price from 250-350$. good luck

according to andy s. book the S came out the same yr. as the XS. my thinking is they did an upgrade to the S and called it the XS. they were the first of the exployer line. they came out in 1999. the explorer 2 in 2003, then the quattro in 2004, the ex se in 2006 and then the ex se pro in 2008 along with the e-trac
that same yr. there was no listing of the safarie date.

if you're gunna get any explorer then you should also get a copy of Andy Sabisch's book. it can really help with the learning curve. jmo.
and remember,"THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION". except the one you don't ask.

It was the very first one. I had the opportunity to buy a pre production one about 18 months ago. It had been lying around the Minelab factory for years when it was discovered and offered to the Miners den Parramatta (Sydney). The fact that it was a pre production unit was a major plus, but it doesn't have all the adjustments of even the XS. it was more like a Safari with a 31 numeric display. The adjustments were similar to the Safari/Quattro.

Mick S is more like Explorer because its explorer, S was released with XS but was cheaper. no screen light, noise cancel button, and programing possibility that actually is worthless. My friend had one and it was good and the same fast like all the rest explorers. some say that early explorer had bad quality plastic and usually cracked near the limlock where upper shaft connects. Yes, the above post by stasys pretty much lays it. I had this machine and the Cam lock did break and the shaft wigled to the point of great annoyance unitll minelab replaced it. Also, the 1/8 in headphone jack was a bad idea on the early models and bacame a needed fis as well. there are ways to compensate for these so if the pice is right ... you will find the solutions to a good machine.
