Question about the overload signal with DD coils on the Omega.

Mick in Dubbo

New member
I was wondering if the overload signal is as prevalent on the Omega when it has the DD coil attached as it is when it has the standard coil attached?
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

smaller target, such as a coin, token, cuff button, smaller bullet, etc., etc. An 'Overload' audio is caused by a target that is too large and too close to the search coil or by any smaller targets that is simply too close.

By 'too close' when referring to a smaller target I mean it might be within an inch or so. You can experience an 'overload' response if the Sensitivity is set very high and will need a little more coil-to-target distance. Also, on a larger DD coil, such as the 11", it not only expresses more concern due to the size of the EMF, but also the close-proximity over-lapped coil effects and you could get a multi-hit response if within

I get more overloads with the 11 than the 5. I seldom use the concentric that was the default coil on the Omega. What OD on a lot are mostly items on the surface and often wire or staples that blend in and are so thin they are hard to see yet overload the system like a manhole cover. I did fight with one of those this week. Sometimes I focus too narrow to the sweep and feel foolish when I look down and I am standing on the edge of a manhole cover (80% buried- looking for a strong VDI [90] and not finding anything).
:yikes:

Thanks for the replies guys.
I found that I get constantly bombarded with overload tones when I detect. I hunt with the coil about an inch off the ground. I found that even the humble square pull tab can give off the occasion brief overload signal, as do all medium sized and large coins (when sitting on the surface). It did not matter how far I reduced the sensitivity, it still overloaded even at minimum setting.
I've sent it back to the Aussie importer a couple of times. They are primarily gold hunters with almost no coin hunting experience. They gave my detector to one of their regular customers (that uses an Omega) (with my permission) to see what he thought, and he seemed to think that it was normal. I asked them if they could sell it through their shop on consignment a couple of months back, as I wasn't prepared to use it if that was normal behavior, however it's been between 2 to 3 months now with no result, so I'm starting to wonder if it might be worthy getting it returned and try hunting with the coil a lot further off the ground before I sell it myself.
Cheers.
Mick Evans.
