Question about todays hunt.

I hunted a nice big open field at an outdoor ampatheatre today with my Ace250. I was in jewelry mode with sensitivity at 5. On several occasions I hit a nice signal in the dime range at about 4". I lifted the coil up about 4"-6" to make sure it wasn't a beer can and it didn't tone so I thought that was good. I dropped back down and got my same good tone. When I went to pinpoint, that's when things got strange. It would pinpoint full scale in about a 1 foot area. When I stopped pinpointing, the original signal would be about 6" or so away from where it originally was. I would dig the hole and scan over everything again and there would be no signal. I even used my pinpointer and could find nothing. My dig hole was a nice plug so I wasn't scattering dirt everywhere. What was I doing wrong?
