Question for Bryce on setting sensitivity level...

outdoors

New member
Just wanted to ask if you ever use the threshold to select the sensitivity level as shown in one of the Minelab videos by Des Dunn for the Explorer?

Hi.
No I sure don't. I pretty much leave my sensitivity set at 26 on both the EX2 and SE with most stock sized coils.

If I do change it because of EMI...ground minerals...iron or trash...etc......I leave it at 26.....but switch to semi auto to settle it down if need be.

I like to run small coils hotter because they can usually handle it. I like sensitivity at semi auto 32 on small coils.

If I do change...I set it at 30 and switch to manual.

I leave it just as I explained on big and small coils the vast majority of the time...but of course there are extreme instances where I have dropped as low as 16 or so if need be.

That rarely happens though and I would say 90% of the time I'm at my "comfort zone" setting of 26 on stock sized coils...and semi auto 32 on small coils.. It just works for me in most sites I hunt...which are mostly parks.

I'm not saying how I do it is right or wrong...only that it works for me.

I agree with Bryce about sensitivity just add that more you use explorer and get more expert on using it you can use higher sensitivity with more success but if you are new you have not to shy to lower it. I personally use just manual sensitivity, but all the time go up and down, if i know place and know that should be more target, I lift to max 32 manual, audio 1-smooth- and look SLOWLY if I missed something even if place can be totally iron infested. but this is a bit extreme!,my suggestion is lower sen. if its to much Iron, up if its clean. good luck Stasys

been using the explorer pro for about 10 months now just wondering about the video and if anyone uses that method...I Run sensitivity about 18 to 26 myself with good results in the parks that I hunt (San Diego Calif.)and
the beaches

Those guys are great hunters.... but you notice they each have their settings as well or suggestions. Even here in the states we notice differences in settings needed to hunt. Im not certain what adjusting the threshold would give you over auto sensitivity. Is he doing the adjusting before or while he has the coil in movement? Is it the same as holding the coil at say waist high and adjusting sensitivity just below chatter? If so .. its simular to what you do with a whites machine for EMI. But... things change once that coil meets the dirt. I sometimes adjust my sensitivity to the point i get screen movement. Does he regularly have to make adjustments? I dont know.... ive not found a lot of need to adjust my regular settings that seem to work.

I too Dew do not change settings except sensitivity and from normal audio to audio 1and back to normal, point is, if I walk on iron I drop sensitivity till 22-24, but think 16 can do ok too. with lower sensitivity in iron explorer works better. with max 32 sensitivity detector silent if i am in woods and not near power line, but detector silent only wen coil on the ground if I lift coil up i start to hear a signals help from Martians. on the ground coil listens silent mother earth in the air help for mars. :stretcher: but its not a problem

One point I didn't make was that WHEN on those rare occasions I must lower the sensitivity...my opinion is that once I drop lower than manual 24...I feel I start to lose a little depth in my IL soil.

Strange thing is that at semi auto 26...I don't feel I lose much if any depth....but my machine runs smoother which helps me if there is a lot of trash or iron.
