Question-for Eric Foster

Hi Eric,
I have finished my CS PI,gone as far as I could without a scope. In my home a air test on US nickel under worst condition with TV on,it will detect a nickel at 12-1/2" not very good.
I tryed CS out doors down by my dock, it worked OK.
Tryed it at beach (salt water) in soft dry sand it worked OK. Down by salt water, wet sand.CS detects dround about 8" in air.only way to counter this, is to lower threshold to null.A loss of dept.
Eric what would you do to stop salt water ground effect on CS-PI. Thanks.
Frank

Hi Frank,
I don't understand how it detects a nickel at 12.5in in air at home, and 8in in air at the wet beach? Or am I misunderstanding things?
Eric.

I have a modified CS model that will detect a nickle at 15" in wet beach sand, if you are saying you are detecting the beach sand itself then apparently you have upset the balance and timing of circuitry, without a scope it is hard to match everything if your are changing things, if you are reading sand(don't understand 8")? then the sensitivity most be very high and your coil inductance is off also, the damping resistor has to be changed to handle some of this, I am a pure amateur and this needs answering by someone like Eric or Reg or Dave etc, good luck!

Hi Don,
Thanks, for your reply.I will recheck all sensitivity changes I have made to my CS.I was thinking about puting a pot at R5,(555 timer) to control it in bad ground.Sensitivity pot at IC ub5 is at O.555 timer is pushed to max R5 and R6(555 timer) are about 6 or 7K now. They are right on,if they were to low detector wont work good at my test place.
I have replaced 709-IC with a faster IC and other miner changes to get rid of pulseing.
I supect that you have replaced your coil with a new and improved 10x14 mono or a DD coil. I am still useing old 10" orignal coil.
I supect that coil is one of my problems.Thanks.
Frank.

No, I am using orginal coil, with power boost. You are making alot of changes, it would seem hard to have things in adjustment if you are not scoping it! Yes, it sems you are picking up the ground with your coil, your inductance has to be balanced by the dampning resisitor, but I am not the one to explain all that to you lol, again you need scope, look for used one on eBay, I think older one can be gotten reasonable, don't think you need a very powerful up to date one. Good Luck...

Don,
Will you tell me how the power boost works.
USE my E-mail, when you get time.

I am sorry, I can not put out info because of a promise to another individual, as well as, the problem of concern not knowing soldering experience you can ruin IC's.
