has anyone tried turning Off the Ironmask? If so did the detector still null over iron or did it beep over iron. On the Explorer when you turn the Ironmask OFF the Explorer beeps when you go over Iron.
Thanks

My gt sov nulls over iron with or without iron mask, if I want to detect iron its go to the all metal mode.
The iron mask being off or on has to do with type of operation , I can get. It helps in some ground or areas of unstablility to have it off some times.
With iron mask on I can hear some targets in iron that I can't with it off. Tried it both ways.
In a few areas I detected I found the detector smooth operating with it off and when I had it on in this particular patch of ground I was getting a lot of nuisance type of signals that didn't appear to be anything. Just over about a 30 foot square area but when I turned iron mask off the detector operation smoothed out. Glad for the switch to turn it off or on. also grad it still nulls iron with it off or on as in the bad area I mentioned I don't have to be listing to iron signals, I did find a few clads there though.

point being, on the Sov with the disc at min you are still discing out some iron, right? So if set at min, what falls below the disc would null regardless of whether the iron mask is on or off, right? How about bigger iron that hits above a min disc setting?
Or am I totally confused. LOL

What I meant by not having to listen to iron signals was in the bad area mentioned in the post I could turn off the iron mask and not hear any nuisance type signals I could work in silent and not hear any threshold either. I could work entirely silent except for actual target signals. and I had found a few clads doing just that , working silent in a pesky nuisance type of spot. Have a lot to learn , probably be able to work the detector different next time in at that spot once I have more experience.

You're not confused Tom, you're dead on from what I'm seeing so far. Some big iron and tin sheets will still sound off, I guess it depends on many factors.
What's really cool about the GT is that when running in silent search/threshold mode the SOUND of the threshold itself will also change to whatever caused it to null out.
Quote from the GT manual below:
Example: If you are searching in disc mode and have just detected a coin, the threshold will remain at the tone of the coin signal, but when you pass over a junk target such as a nail, the audio will NULL ( go silent) over the nail, and the threshold, when it returns, will drop to a lower tone. This can be a usefull feature, as unlike other detectors using Silent Search discrimination modes, you still ignore junk targets, but you know when you have passed over them and can estimate the conductivity they have. End of quote:
I found a 1933 merc this morning doing exactly what's explained above and it wasn't any further than a foot away from a large piece of iron.
The merc was around 10" down and the iron 5 or 6" down and off to the side of the hole. I didn't get a signal per say on the dime, just a rising threshold.
I walked past the iron and over it first but then it hit me that the threshold sound had raised up high like a coin would so I dug and found the merc.
I really like this GT, it's full of surprises

I did a few air test before i sold the GT I had in stock and it would still null on my iron targets with it on or off.
In the owners manual it says with the iron mask on it has greater depth on non-ferrous targets plus it is particularly good at making the distiction between non ferrous targets and iron trash, recognizing the non-ferrous target and providing a audio signal. However with the iron mask on the detector will give a occasional beep on large ferrous targets and threshold may not be as stable. For this reason, begginers may prefer to turn iron mask off.
I feel this is why for years we never had the option on turning it off after the original was made as most that knew the Sovereign never wanted to turn off the iron mask as we could see our coins in with iron better with it on.
This seem like it works the oposite with the Explorer as you want to open it up as much as you can to hear the non ferrous in with the ferrous.
Another thing mentioned I see is the silent search mode that we have the option to turn on or off. With the silent search mode we are able to go a little faster, but yet the advantage of the threshold is it can alert you the presence of a very deep target in a change in the threshold pitch. What I make of this is that for us that like to get the max depth we need to run the threshold like we nornaly do, but for those areas we need to cover faster we may want to run the silent search as we are not worried about those real deep one we have to go slow to get.
The GT is a more versable detector with more user ajustable features to customize it to the area you are searching.
I just need to get another one in stock and try some of these features.

The thing I am trying to find out is if the GT can see smaller gold in Disc Mode than the older units. More along the lines of the Explorer. The factory default setting of the Ironmask on the Explorer is +8. At that setting a lot of gold is also rejected by the Ironmask circuitry. But when you adjust the Ironmask down to -14 the Explorer still rejects 90% of the iron(big stuff will get through) but it now allows it to see a lot of gold that it would have missed at the default setting. My hope is that with the GT when you turn off the Ironmask that you gain the same advantage on gold that you have with the Explorer when you lower it's Ironmask to the -14 area. The difference in overall depth between and Explorer and a Sov has never been that much. But the difference in senstivity to gold while in the Discriminate mode is very noticeable. I am hoping the GT closes this gap!!!! I have always liked the simplicity and ease of use of the Sov series but I mainly hunt the beaches with the Explorer because of it's advantage when hunting for gold on the beach.
