Question for Outlaw users

I need an honest answer about how the 10x12 coil is on the machine. Is it quite a bit heavier and does it unbalance the machine by making it nose heavy? Keep in mind that this is for a person with physical impairments to his only remaining arm which has shoulder, wrist and hand damage. That is why I'm asking you to be honest with your evaluation. I currently use the XP Deus as my main machine and it is the only machine I've ever owned that I can use for hours and multiple days without fatique. My current backup is a Xterra 705 but it can fatique my arm after extended use and having 2 ID detectors with such a big difference in the VDI's is very confusing so I am looking at selling the Xterra and getting the Outlaw as my backup machine. Also, DD coils work better in my ground, that's why I need to know about that coil.

>does it unbalance the machine by making it nose heavy?
It does. For people vulnerable to fatigue it could be heavy.

DirtAngler,
This is from post I made a couple weeks ago. Hope it helps.

"Last week I obtained a 12" x 10" Concentric Coil as part of a trade. The weight difference is pretty substantial. The detectors weight of 2 lbs 8 oz was increased to 3 lbs 4 oz. These are actual weights on my postage scale. All of that increase weight is out at the end of the machine. By decreasing the shaft length one position the extra weight was noticeable and feels a little sluggish swinging but not uncomfortable."

Hi DirtAngler, with weight becoming such an important factor in using the larger coils on any machine I would suggest it may be worth the thought of sheding the coil cover if ground (no rocks etc.) would allow it. When I bought my used Tejon the coil cover was cracked already so I just peeled it and was surprized at how much lighter it either actually was or "seemed" to be.It really did appear to me to make a big difference, so maybe you will get some thoughts from others about that. Some shed'um , some don't, but it do make a difference! HH, Charlie

I have a bandido II Umax, silver Sabre Umax, Eldorado Umax and a Compadre. Swinging the Compadre is like swinging your hand from one side of your body to the other through the air. It feels like no weight at all. My other detectors all have coil covers. It makes a significant difference without them on weight wise. Even though in reality the coil cover is just a piece of plastic. My detectors feel a lot lighter with the coil covers off. If I know I am hunting in grass I leave the coil cover in the car. Biggest coil I have is the 9x8 right now. I don't know about the bigger coils. HH

The 10x12 is harder to swing. Have you considered a swingy thingy or other such apparatus?

My lack of dexterity won't allow use of such devices. I did have a MXT Pro and an Etrac, they were too heavy for me to use for extended hunts. How do you think the Outlaw with the DD coil compares to these 2 detectors. I will admit that though heavier, the MXT was pretty well balanced even with a 10x12 coil.

Hi there DIRT ANGLER I just bought a Outlaw but I haven't much time with the big coil on it yet. But the one time I ran it I thought it was nose heavy compared to the 8 inch. Most people would have no problem with it for a while but I can see it getting tiresome in a long run with it. Hope that helps and I'm not to late. Good luck.

I found that if you have been using the 8" you will find the 10" DD slightly heavier but it is not a big difference. Picking up the two coils with extension arms attached, the difference is very minor.
I love using the 10" in areas where I know there is not a lot of junk.

Dirtangler,
I just weighed both the 9"x8" concentric coil and the 12"x10" DD coil (which comes with the Outlaw). The 9x8 (standard coil) wieghed (with lower stem) 1 lb 5oz. The 12x10 DD (with lower stem) weighed 1 lb 10 oz, so there is a 5 oz difference between the standard 9x8 (eg Golden Umax) and the 12x10 DD, which comes with the Outlaw. The weighing was done on my kitchen scales (in Australia) so I wont claim 100% accuracy, but it should be close enough to give you an idea of the difference in weight. I found the 12x10 DD to be much more comfortable to use than the 12x10 concentric coil, and it is certainly lighter than the concentric. Hope this helps

Ummmm ..... Me thinks you should have kept the Silver uMax. They don't come much lighter than that, unless it is the Compadre.

I dont have much trouble with the 10x12. If you make the shaft shorter then the difference is no really that noticeable. If balance is a problem you could put a weight behind your elbow to counter the 10x12. This would make the whole unit heavier but it would balance better. The only one who will really be able to know what is right is you. Tesoros are some of the lightest units out there. Good luck
