Question for Reg

Frank,

There are lots of posts on this forum and on the TDI forum on how to use the TDI to ignore a lot of the iron we encounter while metal detecting. All one has to do is search for them.

The truth is, there is no true iron discrimination by any PI that I know of. The TDI series can provide a high tone on most iron if set up correctly while providing a low tone on many copper and silver objects. This technique is a form of discrimination in my opinion since iron can be ignored while hunting for silver and copper coins or other similar objects. All a person has to do is to adjust the ground balance down to a lower number such as 4 or 5 while the delay is at 10 and most iron will then generate a high tone while copper and silver coins will cause a low tone. Select high conductor (low tone) and coins made of silver and copper will sound off while most ferrous junk will create a high tone which is then ignored.

Just how to set up the TDI to be able to ignore most iron objects has been discussed many times. I think my first time of discussing this feature was back in 2008 before the TDI actually was being made by White's. So, how can the feature be discussed before the detector was built? Simple, the original TDI is basically a copy of Eric Foster's Goldscan 5 and the first detector to have the conductivity switch was the Goldscan 5 just before the TDI was introduced.

I hope this helps.
