Today while driving on a country road, I found this old abandoned church. It was on fenced property with a sign, "Private Property, No Trespassing". I have found a few places like this. I would at least attempt an effort to get permission from the owner to do some detecting. How do you guys go about finding out who the owner is? What kind of approach and methodology do you present to the landownerwhen you find him? I really feel good about this site, but I am green at this and have not worked out a smooth introduction and plan for asking permission to hunt other's property. Good luck this year to all.

Asking neighbors may work and checking county records will. Pro's and cons on permission letters as liability starts flashing to many landowners and your done before you start. Some landowners appreciate the professionalism of a permission letter and may work to get you permission so its yur call...Arrive clean , shaven and usually in the evening when the husband is in the residence. For gosh sakes don't have a big knife strapped to your side. Basically explain its your hobby, you won't do any damage and see what happens. I guess we all have a little speech of sorts but make it short and don't mention treasure. Just not into hunting someones backyard but an old church abandoned property etc. works for me. Actually could probably write a book about it but do expect rejection as its part of the process.

James,
Like Dan said - ask the neighbors who owns the property. Once you find the land owner, give him your speal...
Knock on the door and then take about four steps back. I usually start by introducing myself and immediately tell them that I have a hobby of metal detecting. People are aprehensive of strangers at the door. Once they know what you are about you can usually see them become more at ease.
Ask if they own the property and then ask if you could look around with your MD. Keep it short and then shut up and let them talk.
Works for me. Hope it does for you too.
