operators on this forum(or whosoever can answer)..today i was getting what i thought was certainly a very deep coin/with only a whisper of a sound--was huntin in custom program..using learn i programmed with a dime and a quarter so it was a tight setup for cherry picking.the clad dimes and memorial pennies were giving very good sounds.the quiet sounds were always coke cans at two or three inches deep or vienna sausage can tops or other can parts.the vco over these things was extremely strong,so i began probing with an ice pick and you can tell when the pick goes thru a piece of can.i did that to avoid so much digging.anyone else on this forum had that problem with the se??did'nt think to switch to all metal,or any other setting..maybe just a fluke?? hope so..hh:minelab:

Aluminum will sound like Coins no matter what kind of Discrimination you have set up in the Se or any other Explorer Model. You can't Disc out Junk and just find Coins...I wish that was possible but the technology just isn't up to it yet. One way to tell them Aluminum Cans is by raising your Coil off of the ground. If you can still get the Target when your 8" or more off of the ground, then it's a larger object closer to the surface. If the Target shows Deep on the Depth Meter and you can't get the Target after you raise the Coil 6", then it might be a Deep Coin. Also, you can check to see how big the item is using the VCO Pinpointing. If the item seems rather long from different directions (bigger than your normal size Coin), then it most likely is a bigger item. If it is small, then it's most likely a Coin or some small piece of Copper or Aluminum.

Now if the Cans were 3" Deep and your Volume and Signal response was not as loud as it should have been, then maybe you might have some other issue. It should have been a Screamer of a Signal at only that Deep. I hope this helps you out and if not, describe the problem a bit better if you can and someone should be able to help you out. Good Luck and HH Ellis.

the problem was the tight set up program you were using because any large metal object that shallow should really wail at you .... especially aluminum.
Try using bigger blocks while in learn program or better yet go into iron mask screen and let your brain start getting use to more and more sounds until you can run it fairly wide open or close to it.

Good Hunting
Mike

Your disc. is not actually classifying targets by "composition", but rather "conductivity". Unfortunately, there will always be junk items that share the same conductivities with good items. So for example, a single tab might be easily rejected (if you were cherry picking), but a whole aluminum can, made of the exact same material (ie.: aluminum), will sound up into the coin category. So you have to combine sounds, shape, and experience, with your cursor bounces, to determine what you want to dig, and what you want to pass. The machine can't do it all, especially in junky areas where can slaw, foil wads, etc... abound.
