Question on coils, using the Minelab to GQ SS V2 adapter

colt

New member
I have a couple of questions about using a Minelab GP/SD adapter on the GQ SS V2.

1. Is there a size limit on how big, or how small of a Minelab coil, that I can use on the GQ V2, when using the adapter.

2. Can you also use Coiltek and Nugget Finder coils on the V2, with the adapter.

3. Any way of getting a list of compatible coils.

Thanks

Hi Colt,

I see no reason you can't use any of the ML compatible coils on the GQ. Now, on the bigger coils, you will probably have to adjust the delay back for the coil to work properly, but that should be about it.

Remember, the GQ is a low powered unit, so going larger in coils may not get the depth you want. I would personally limit the size of the coil to maybe 16" to 18" max and then it should be a DD tpe if you are going to use it on dry land.

I have the stock 11" mono and a 11" round DD Minelab coil, I thought I would ask, so I can keep an eye out for good used coils. I am a bit of a scrounger by habit and a pack rat by nature, never know when I might run accross a good deal on some used GP/SD coils.

Hi Colt,

One thing you might keep an eye out for are coils that don't work right on a ML. You might be able to get them free or for shipping. It is possible they will work ok on your GQ.

I had a guy send me a "broken" coil that wouldn't work right on his GP. I took it apart and couldn't find anything seriously wrong, so I tried it on a GQ clone and it worked fine. Now, the guy said the coil would work ok ad then wouldn't, so I still wasn't sure just what was wrong.

ML's are very touchy and not forgiving when it comes to coils. My guess is the coil in question had a problem with the shielding that was causing the instability. The shielding paper on the bottom was a little loose because of aging and would or could move if the coil housing was flexed. It is my guess that was the main problem.

I ended up tearing the coil down completely just to see if there might be something else internally wrong, but the shielding problem was all I could find.

Most likely unless the Nugget Finder coils are the early ones, you may have problems with them. Nugget Finder has made a design change to their coils, and I have had problems with them on the Goldscan. Nugget Finder did confirm a circuit change in the manufacture on the coils.

I have not tried these later manufactured Nugget Finder coils out on the Goldquest, so please be aware of this if purchasing them.
