Question on CZ-3D and Buffalo Nickels

I just bought a used CZ-3D and I was doing an air test on a 1919 Buffalo nickel. In the salt mode it gave a high tone and in Enhanced mode it gave a mid tone. I thought that it should give a high tone on a Buffalo nickel in Enhanced mode. It was a nickel that I got from a club hunt. I don't think it was ever buried. Is that why it is giving a mid tone in Enhanced mode. A newer nickel will give a high tone in Enhanced. I hope that everything is working as it should be.

What kind of tone do any of you guys get on a buffalo nickel in Enhanced mode in an air test. I would be curious to know. Thanks

Scott,

I've had I think 5 3D's just to test one against another...there truly are differences, particularly in iron and how the machine hits nickels in enhanced. I happen own a great 3D that specs out to perfection...it still will read buffalos differently, even dug ones, depending on the amount of corrosion/condition and maybe year minted. I've been airtesting in my basement all winter(since it's frozen out there with snow), even yesterday, and I found this to be the case. I just picked up a super nice CZ-5; the only analog/needle CZ I haven't used except for the original CZ-6-it hits all nickles new and old very hard without bouncing to anywhere from 8-10 inches, whereas the CZ-3D does bounce between foil and nickel and sometimes round pulltab depending on the coin and distance from the coil. I know the 3D likes the dirt matrix with the halo for best performance; air testing is not as reliable a measure. Many out there could I'm sure provide much more insight...HH

The 3d needs the nickel to be corroded in the ground to hit correctly. That your buff reads pull tab is not surprising. What surprises me is that your newer nickel hits hi-tone in enhanced. I have found buff and v-nickels that hit hi-tone in and out of the ground in enhanced. Stay away from sites that have been recently used as beavertails will drive you crazy hitting like nickels in enhanced.

I have found quite a few older nickels that hit hi-tone in enhanced and foil when you switch to salt mode. That's how the 3D is supposed to work.

I might just have to get me a corroded Buffalo nickel to test it on. Anybody have a corroded Buffalo that they want to sell? Thanks.
