Question on digging targets

Edgeman

New member
Hello to all, Newbe here. I have been coin shooting in the local parks and doing ok. Not getting rich, but no problem finding coins. I would like to start getting into the gold and silver rings tho. My question is, when i get a signal that is a coin, i use a probe to locate the coin and then decide how to extract it. Works good. But if its a ring, I'm not sure i would be able to find it with a probe. I'm THing in the grass and I know I could cut the sod, but would prefer not to. Especially since I'm wanting to start digging all targets over 35. I'm in the southwest and the grass is tough to come by around here. It doesn't grow real well. If the ring was on edge, it might probe ok, but if its flat, I'm not sure I have much of a choice other than cut a plug. Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions? Thanks for a great Forum. Lots of knowledge here, and I hope to learn lots more. Larry

I think you are on a good track. I use an ice pick with a blunt tip to prob and feel for the target, and I also use my pro pointer to locate targets before probing if it will detect it from the surface. You may want to try something like my pulltab puller I made. I am including some pictures just in case you want to make one. It works real good if you can feel the target and loosen up the dirt a little as you go in. The other day I hooked and pulled a wire cooking grill.

Just some ideas,

Ron in WV

WV62, Great tools. I will start making a set today. Thanks for the info, Larry

Easy does it, that is not a set of pullers, that is prototypes, always trying to improve on an idea. Looking at the middle picture of just the points, the one on the left is the one most used. The one in the middle will hook good but the handle is to small and the tip is a little hard to push in the ground. The one on the right is my newest one and it seems about as good as the one on the left. I need to use it a little more and get those edges to round down a little.

That hook is made from the flat area of a flat tip screw driver. Also it help to know which way the hook is after you put it in the ground, so I cut smooth notch in the handle for my thumb. So where ever my thumb is where the open side of the hook is.

Also as soon as I pull a ring with one, I will be changing the name from pulltab puller to ring puller.

Good luck,

Ron in WV

For questionable shallow ring targets, I would use a Pro-Pointer if you have one to see if it will make a peep, and then use your probe. I know a few guys who do that for well-manicured lawns. Just a thought :)

I have seen what rubbing the dirt off of a silver coin can do so I have always been afraid to use a probe like that. Do a lot of you use them? Just curious?
Thanks

Eric in RI, and flyin-lowe, I do use an ice pic probe to help locate my target before digging. I dint have a pro-pointer as of yet. That will be my next purchase for this hobby. If you are care full, you wont hurt the coin, much. Im sure it scratches it a little. For me, im just finding newer coins. I try not to cut a plug any more than I absolutely have to. Im working city parks that have some real nice grass. When I do cut a plug, I try to keep it a 3 sided cut, then fold the plug back, hopefully this will help to not kill the grass as bad. I have been back to a place that I cut and pulled the plugs, the grass in the pulled plugs turned brown. The nice green grass looked like it had chicken pox from all the plugs I cut and pulled!
WV62, I made a pull tab extractor and so far im very pleased. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Your welcome,

Your extractor sounds a little more fancy than my puller. Maybe I can find some lightning bolt stickers to put on mine.

HAHA, Now thats an idea! But even without the stickers, it works great! Larry

Cutting a three sided plug will help keep the grass from being sucked up buy a mower but it won't help keep the grass alive anymore then pulling it all the way out of the ground. You have some tangled roots and a thatch layer that is holding it to the ground, but I don't think it is doing anything to keep the grass alive.
