Question on double numeric readout?

backslyder

New member
Forgive me ahead of time if someone has already addressed this issue, but I'm just curious as heck about the 2 numeric readouts I believe you Explorer owners have. I have a Minelab Quatro, that I still love, but it only has one numeric readout from -10 to +40, which covers both ferrous and conductive. Ok.......... I seem to get pretty consistent and accurate readings on say, a penny at a +34, nickel at +14, or old rusty nail at about a -10. Now, I know I can listen to the targets with either ferrous or conductive "audio", but I still only have one "numeric" readout. I understand, (or it seems to me, from reading Andy's book) that you Explorer owners can really use that extra numeric readout to your advantage to help decipher say between a coin or a screw cap, because even though the conductive reading on both of them is close on the conductive side, the ferrous reading is a bit different, thus allowing you to make a more informed choice on whether to dig or not. Just wanted your "take" on any of that? Thankyou, Marc Trainor.

sometimes they hit close and sound good you have to dig to keep your doubts from taking hold with i wonder if that was a good target as they say best discriminator is you digger

I`ve found that the ferrous can read almost anything and change with each pass. I depend on the smart find screen more than the digital. That is the true difference maker with the SE PRO, IMHO. I do check the numbers, if I get that far , but last in a line of sound, smart find, then digital. Hope that helps.

Any method that other machines dont have is an asset.. or can be. These dual digital readings increase TID accuracy on the smartscreen and thats what the MLs are know for at depth. No doubt the Cond digits are more accurate... but those extra points on an S curve just really helps. The disadvantage is to those using just the digital readings. They have to learn more iffy targets. Is it a disadvantage? Sometimes not... because you tend to dig more targets... and thats the key to those surprise iffy coins. The tones are still the key tho to the explorers success not the digits.

I hope this comes in as a response to all three of your answers as of 4/28/11. Thank you all so much for some very revealing and interesting information. I love coilswinger's response: "The best discriminator is your digger". Darn it!!! I know he's right. Of course I'm getting older and lazier, but boy that's a pretty true statement in my eyes, but as to the rest of the responses: I guess the audio and smart find are some real "key" strategies on this one. Thank you all again for some very relevant answers. Marc Trainor.
