I am having problems figuring out Notch and Discrimination. If I want to discriminate out say up to 25, where does the Notch have to be for that to happen? Do I put notch on 0? I want to discriminate out iron in the ground but I keep hearing it. I am detecting a place with a lot of old nails. I do not want to hear them or dig most of them. But I am not understand the how the Discrimination works with notch. Can anyone give me any help.

Discriminate cuts out targets starting at the lowest conductivity numbers, and discriminates out everything from "zero" VDI up the the disc. level you choose. If you set disc at 15, for example, you will discriminate everything from zero VDI to 15 (i.e., the whole iron range). Notch, though, will allow you to select "segments" of VDI to discriminate out. For instance, you could, as just one example, use discriminate to notch out all iron, just as above, but then set a "notch" to eliminate things in the pull tab/screw cap range, but still include nickels, which fall BETWEEN iron, and pull tabs. Does this make sense?

Tom.....leave the notch at factory default, which I think is 1. If 25 is the magic number just turn your discrimination up to 25 that will prevent an audio response on all targets below 25. The target VDI will still show up on your screen so you can see what's under the coil. I typically run my discrimination at 6 in an area with a lot of iron, in quiet sites I like to run at 0 or 1 so I can hear everything under the coil. In my area of PA modern nickles are usually anywhere from 28 to 31 on the VDI but buffs are usually a little lower. The one and only V nickel I found last year was a solid 26 from all directions....so I would recommend not going too much higher on the disc than 25.
You may also want to experiment with your sensitivity in conjunction with your disc setting, sometime you can run disc and 0 and lower the sensitivity to calm her down. The LTD is NOT a quiet machine if you crank her up that's for sure....but.....she will lock on coins like a bird dog on a covey!!

How to use Notch on the Fisher F75 and LTD's
It really is simple..the manual appears to make it difficult..and that's only because they forgot to stress the Fixed set of numbers for notching abilities.
In other words if your detecting in a park.. your using Discrimination at 25. all of a sudden your getting a lot of one type of pull tabs. Say it falls in the
#38 Target ID.. Over and over again..You go to notch..press menu dial to the number 38..and press menu. A dash will darken up above on the left side of the tab name on display. You removed the Number 38...but you also removed 36, 37,39,40,41,42,43,44,45.....Because the notch is set up in a fixed set of numbers on each target category..36 through 45 is the lower half of factory set notch numbers in tabs area... You will always remove all factory set numbers when notching out target numbers that is above your discrimination setting...You will always be putting the numbers in with notch if they are lower than your discrimination setting. You need to know these notch fixed numbers to understand the notch system.
Now if your running Discrimination at 40..then the notch system is designed to do just the opposite of Discrimination..So 36 37 38 39 40 will be notched in..
41 42 43 44 45 will be notched out. Notch always does the opposite of the Discrimination. So if you want all the fixed numbers in tabs on lower half out..Move your discrimination to 36 (Get your discrimination number at the lowest fixed number) in the range you want to remove. Before, you set the notch.. It's your choice..but you have to work the two systems together for full benefits.
