Question on false signals

Hey guys. This question might seem rather crazy. I am obviously new to detecting but a thought crossed my mind today. I used to be an archaeologist before I joined the military and have encountered many coins in the ground. Often I noticed copper coins with large amounts of corrosion/oxidization seems to leach into the soil quite a bit...leaving greenish staining in the soil. My question is this. If you got a signal...dug up a large penny, and rechecked the hole (as it's possible there could be something else int he same hole), would the remnants of corrosion/staining in the soil give a false signal these is still something in the hole!? Sorry if this is a stupid question...if there is such a thing when it comes to detecting. Thanks <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
 
I don't believe there could be enough corrosion from a coin to give a false reading. After you dig it up the halo would be disturbed and any ridual corrosion would be minimal. Now a big ol' chunk of rusting iron, maybe.
 
I agree with John there on the big iron. I hunt in All Metal (2500) and it deffinitely leaves enough in the soil to pick up, but you'll get used to the signal, very light.
 
One time I hit a "honey hole" full of well weathered iron junk. I kept getting signals that seemed to be coming from the halo effect even after I was pretty well sure that I had cleaned all the solid targets from the hole.
