Question on the 50 and recovery speed in trash

Scott Maine

New member
I need to update my ID detector for celar holes hunting. As for fields I always use my Nautilus....but it is not my choice for trash...for obvious reasons.
I generally only use an ID detector when I am in either an area with alot of modern trash and need to ignore certain targets yet do not wish to run disc up and kill depth. then the second is iron filled areas like celar holes.
So how has the x-50 been in iron trash....and how quick is target recovery and target masking. Not concerned about depth quite as much....again this is for mainly trashy iron locations.
Right now the choice is down to the X-50...and M6 or T2 for the new years replcement ID detector in iron garbage

From what I have been reading the M6 will not give you what your looking for. The 50 I have read provides good recovery. I had my choices down to 4 models and went with the 50. I will have it by Friday it ships tommorrow. I currently have an XLT and it does quite well with its adjustable recovery rate however the M6 does not have an adjustable recovery rate. The T2 I have read has problems with screwcaps. Hope this helps.

First let me say fast recovery speed and target reponse are worthless if the coil in use is too large. No detector recovers if the coil still sees the target.
The recovery speed of the M6 is way faster than that of the XTerra 50.
I have both detectors. Go to the Whites forum and read my post about the M6. If you buy the M6 and don't like it i will be happy to trade you my XTerra 50 for it.

The Xterras with their only available coil size would not be my first choice for hunting dense trash. Target "recovery" speed is decent, but initial target "response" speed leaves something to be desired in that it shows a very obvious delay using the stock coil. For your needs, the two things I would look at first would be availability of a small coil (4-5 inch diameter) and a super quick target response speed. The T-2 has the quick response, but again only the large DD coil available at present. Lateral target separation is great on the T-2, but the heel to toe EMF is still very long. The M-6 has the smaller coils available, but no notching function. Have you considered the Ace 250 ? It has pretty much the right combination of features and function for trash hunting coupled with the 4.5 Sniper coil.

I was under the impression that you used it a couple of hours and then posted it for sale, or did you get another one ?
Just curious !

and got me a second one to give it a longer workout.
Why, do you have an M6 or MXT you can trade for my XTerra ?

HH,
Andy

but until a smaller coil comes out I would have to agree that it's not my first choice in heavy trash conditions. However, I'm not seeing the same slow reset rate that others have posted about and I'm very satisfied with the information the 50 gives in all metal.
It's notching capabilities are second to none in it's class IMO and so far depth is not an issue even when cherry picking.
The M6 did not impress me enough to go out and buy one after using a loaner for a few days. It's a good unit and has plenty of coils readily available and that's always nice for a new unit.
But, if you ever wonder out into the woods for some relic hunting or just plain old coin shooting in old farm fields with hot dirt DON'T expect the M6 to run with the 50 because it won't.
It's depth, lack of weight and other offerings makes it pretty irresistible to not try it if your a relic hunter. Hunting among lot's of iron like cellar holes has not been a problem for me with the 50 so far,I've hunted several of them and found all kinds of small brass and coins in the mix of heavy iron.
On the T2, well I couldn't say, never put one in my hand.

I don't own a M6 and the MXT is being replaced with a new one. I had one get totally destroyed last week in a accident but another one is on the way.
Like everyone else, I have my favorites too.

i still need you to watch me what i do on the minelab forum, hehehe. :) :) :)

Don't mean to rattle anyones Chain hear. But using an X50 for say an hour or two then selling it and hoping on a whites. Then like two weeks later (?) getting another X50 for a longer tryout, kind of duos not work for me Credibility Wise. I see a lot for this hear and it Throws Me!

1. You are right, i sold my first XTerra 50 to a well known forum member who lives just a few miles away. He told me later that he had to send it to minelab because it did itself turn on in his car.

2. So i thought maybe i had a bad XTerra and did not notice it and that could have been the reason for the bouncing ID.

That was the reason i bought one again and gave it a second chance.

3. I didn't buy the Whites because i wouldn't have a detector after selling the XTerra. I have many detectors, different models, different brands. I am not brand loyal, a detector works for ME or it does not.

4. Detectors that works great for ME are Whites M6 and MXT, Troy X5, Tesoro Vaquero, Minelab Quattro, Garrett Ace 250.
And for all of them i can buy a smaller coil to work in trash.

Not so for the XTerra 50 !!! For the Quattro you have to buy an aftermarket small coil, but at least you can get one.

5. Credibility ? I don't care to much about "Credibility" since i post MY opinion about any detector and i don't care who likes it or not. Sorry, i don't like "your" (overhyped) XTerra to much.

6. Did you see all the " XTerra for trade or for sale" posts on the classifieds ? Wonder why they want to get rid of the new wonder detector ?

HH,
Andy

Your opinion is great :) However after reading this morning that with the Xterra 50 a gentleman found 4 coins stuck together at 16" in the ground I can't wait for mine to get here in a few days! I also have a Whites XLT but have not been impressed with either the M6 or MXT although the MXT was tempting..... I agree that either a detector works for you or not and everyone will have their preferences. I just hope the X50 works for me. I will soon find out. I am impressed with all I have read about the X50 contrary to the other units I have read responses about which I was considering.... Only time will tell.

I read that too. Looks like some detectors detect deeper in the ground than air-test.
The detectors i use air-test better than in ground depth. Not saying you can't find coins 16" deep, but they must be very large.

Hello Scott !

I have been using the X-Terra 50 for over 2 months, at least 4-5x a week and about 2-3-4 hours at a time on the dry sand on our Belgian beaches. So, lots of modern trash...

I was a bit used to an XP which has a very high recovery speed. But I must admit : the X-Terra's recovery speed is very good, too. I prefer the X-Terra to the XP. Doesn't this say it all ?

Does this help you ?

Hi Andy, absolutly true see the picture below under JBM oh yes it was 7 coins nearly one inch in diameter and made from copper alloy.
They were probably wrapped in a handkerchief when dropped and the material rotted away leaving the coins stuck together.Jerry.

7 copper coin's in the ground for 200 years, that had to be one big halo. Do you have any idea what they are ? I once dug a 1898 "V" nickel at over 24", and that's the truth...WTG... HH...BJ

with this many diverse opinions, the mind becomes vexed and it is disconcerting to the Constitution of those of us who find are self's shut in by these dark cold months. We think only of those happy time to come when once again we mite play are hand upon the field and shores-of are dreams of Trasher. In this, we look to see a report of the long term trial on the new X machine that makes it clear the Good the Bad or the Indifferent Nature of the beast! Hoping for spring we Patiently Wait

Can't be too bad. You bought two in the course of a month. You're also hanging around the X-Terra forum so they must hold some attraction for you.
