I bought the kit Whites offers with my new MXT,(bag head phones and probe). The probe switch is a toggle switch that has three positions, the toggle is very easyly bumpt into the on position, I notice in pictures of the probe now looks like they have changed to a push button switch. Can the old type switch be updated, and if so how hard is it to do?
 
Juat got an e-mail back from White's and they said the toggle was the new style switch. It is still very easy to turn on inadvertently.(when ya dont want to.)

This is the St. Louis Fatboy. I thought your post was interesting since I have been haggeling with a Whites Service center on my "4 month old" Bullseye Probe problems.
I have had nothing but trouble with it and they have finally sent me the part I needed at no charge. They wanted to charge me for what I consider poor design but I cry pretty good.... <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry">
My unit has a small push button switch with a rubber boot over the metal push button. It is difficult to "directly push this sucker in" without putting some forward or reverse pressure on it. The boot came off and I wanted a new one. I was told it was my fault... <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> that I had to take care and press the button directly "head on" with no forward or reverse pressure. Try probing a hole and being that delicate!!!!
Also the unit was falsing a lot and you have to take it apart to adjust the unit. I finally got it tuned and had to change batteries on it last week and found the falsing returned. So it appears you have to go through these motions on every battery change.
I'm not that impressed with it other than the size is great and when it works it does a relatively good job.
My old Automax Precision V2 probe that came with my unit still works great after all of the abuse I gave it. Most folks on this forum say it is a piece of shXX but it worked great for me. The size is rediculous but other than that it has performed well for me.
My next probe will probably be the Sunray DX probe that works with VDI readings. That will probably give me something else to complain about as the added weight.. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">

Johnny I havent used mine that much but besides the toggle problem mine does go off when I touch the ground, but you just hold it there a second and it stops. Maybe I just need to get used to it. from one fat boy to another-- keep on digging! Larry

I have the automax v-2 and it does what it is supposed to, beep when you get near the target. I broke the first one I had then got another and works just fine. I found out on the first one you can't do a whole lot of hard pushing and prying with it, when they say it is maent to probe around in the soil you have loosened up , they meant it.

Y'know, I just bought a new one but still with the old push button switch. I haven't even installed the battery yet.
On the box it says fully automatic tuning and one year parts and labor warranty. If yours does not automatically tune itself then something must be wrong with it. Might be worth another call to White's.
 
where you are located? I live in rural Coweta about 25 miles from Tulsa. (I have an MXT too)

Yeah mine says automatically tunes, etc. but don't believe it.
If you get falsing, where it occasionally goes off, and no object around, then it is picking up ground mineralization. This indicates it is set to a too sensitive setting. Mine came this way from the factory... go figure. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
To adust, take off the four outer back screws, turn the modular screw adjustment full counter-clockwise, hold the unit with tip pointing up, and slowly adjust the screw slot clockwise until it goes off. Once it goes off, turn it slightly counter-clockwise and then test by turning the unit 90 degrees either left or right. If it doesn't go off you should be adusted. The unit is made to reach a nickel at 3/4 of an inch.
A lot of adjusting for a unit that doesn't need adjusting.. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
 
I JUST GOT MY PINPIONTER BACK FROM THE SERVICE CENTER. THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE BOOT AND OTHER INTERNAL PARTS. THIS WAS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO ME. I DO AGREE THAT THE RUBBER BOOT TENDS TO BREAK EASILY. I WILL HAVE TO BE MORE CAREFUL WITH IT SINCE THE YEARS COVERAGE IS OVER. HOPEFULY I CAN GO OUT MD IN THE MORNING, THE SNOW IS MELTING IN JACKSON, MI.
 
This has a metal belt clip on the back- got it at a gun show- used for personal organizers etc- about $9 in cordura. I just cut it down the flat, and a notch at the switch. can clip to cargo pants or belt. I had a retractable nylon cord, but it broke after a few days- need heavier gauge.

Great post, I adjusted mine this morning and hope it will be a little more stable, like when I first got it. I replaced the "boot" on my switch, it only lasted a few times out, very poor design. Greg
