What would be a good detector for meteorite hunting?
Are there metal detectors made solely for that purpose?

I don't think it would really matter much being as most seem to be iron, nickle, etc..
I assume most space rocks would read on the lower conductivity ranges.
Course, the better the machine, the deeper one would be likely to find them.
I've seen TV shows of guys that drag huge monster coils across the fields
with tractors. And he's found a few good ones. Naturally, if I was out looking for
those with my Ace 250, I'd use the 9x12 coil to cover as much ground as possible,
and get the most depth.
From what I hear, the desert can be one of the easier places to find those as you
can visually scan the area for possible targets which often will stick out against
the natural desert rocks. Then you can try the machine on them, and whip out a
magnet to get a further clue.
The guy with the tractor likes to do the big crop fields, say in Kansas, Nebraska,
etc..
Was just thinking.. Being those are pretty low conductivity ranges, it's possible
a gold machine might be a good pick. But like I say, if it's got metal, most
any decent machine should hit on it.
 
I have found that Iron meteorites drive the threshold negative on every VLF machine That I have tested on on these items including the bigguns.
I have an approx 8lb Iron that produces a negative/decreasing threshold. I guess it has to do with the way the crystal structure of the iron is altered during the heating by the entry into the atmosphrere.
Has enybody detected an iron meteorite that produces a positive threshold from an All Metal VLF detector?

a large meteorite broke up over the middle of the country. that is why the guy has went to so much trouble trying to find pieces of it. big chunks are worth big bucks.
 
I went and picked up some meteorites recently. Some meteorites are worth a lot more then platinum and are well sought after. The best type of detector for hunting meteorites has always been a gold metal detector. A lot of the other ones simply won't pick them up. The ACE would only pick up a large piece with the sniper coil at about 1/2". The GTI 1500 zero discrimination/standard imaging coil wouldn't pick it up and the GTI 2500 would barely pick it up in true all metal mode/standard imaging coil. But the Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger gave a nice loud, clear signal 4-5 inches with the standard 5" x 10" DD coil. The Infinium also gave a nice reading.
 
Most meteorites contain a good deal of nickel hence the higher frequencies work better. As I recall the old Compass TR's with 100 khz worked good on them. Did you try the TR mode on them?

So my MXT would be a good machine for this kind of hunting.
I should probably just put it in all metal?
