I've been out twice since receiving my Ace 250 but haven't really been able to find anything. I found four pennies the first time and a dime and some trash the second.

Don't get me wrong. I get tons of pretty good hits but the ground is so dry and hard I can't dig. How are you guys finding so much in this weather? :ranting:

I live about 15 miles from a lake. Guess I should try there, again.

How many of you live in small towns but still make good finds?

...If you are considering hunting corps lakes, call the project office of the lake you have in mind and have them send you a permit. It's free but necessary at many projects. Some districts do not use them as long as you are hunting in designated beaches and playgrounds.

You can do it with the 250. Found $4.25 yesterday in sweltering heat, swishing in mid-thigh deep water. Maybe that ring or bracelet or necklas will come tomorrow. <><

NO no no! Don't go to the lake yet! I just read an article that water hunting is really hard for beginneres. What you need to do first as a beginner is go to a well watered city park or school. But before you do that READ your manual. Then go through your home and gather up some metal things and dont forget pocket change. Do some air test in "all metal" and see how the tones sound. Have gold? Try it! See what happens in different modes and different sensitivity settings. Get your most expensive pillow covers and ask someone to hide a coin under it and practice pinpointing. Do this outside on your yard outside. If your grass needs mowing leave it for now and toss some coins over your shoulder and see if you can pin point them. Practice retrieving things from under ground at your home.This will help sharpen your skills so you don't leave big gapping holes. Use All Metal and dig up every signal that repeats on the swing from both direction. And in addition to this forum theres a yahoo ace 250 users group that has a bunch of swell people who are more then eager to get you up and going. (That toltec_100 seems like a heck of a wise guy!)

Beginner frustration is normal. I have been hunting 30 years and I still can't find much with a new detector, when I first get it.

Main thing to keep in mind is the more you use your detector the better you will get. I like to hunt in all metal and after a day or so of that I try to guess what it is before I dig it.

One thing I tell everyone is something Dang mentioned. "Parks and schools are your class rooms, until you get good enough to graduate to old homesteads, and ghost towns." And guess what? The type of items you will find in the old homesteads and ghost towns will be different, then the parks and schools, so that will put you through another class room type situation.

One of the first items you need to have is a good digger. Hard dirt should just be more difficult to remove, not stop you. I have a planting trowel that I modified with some reinforcements, and I have it sharp enough to cut meat. Just like a Doc, ya got to have a good scalpel:rofl: I don't know your methods, but make sure you are digging good repeatable signals and stay after it until you find it. Just remember to be aware of anything that could be in the ground that you don't want to dig, damage, or cause you harm. Sharp tools will cause more damage.

The planting trowel had the perfect shape (for me) It has a curved, body with a rounded tip, and tapers larger as it goes from the front to the back. The handle is wood, with a metal collar. The collar has a metal insert from the trowel, and that is where I beefed it up. I took a piece of metal strap and welded it to the collar and back to the trowel. I can jamb it in the ground and use reasonably good pressure and just pop the dirt out. This is not break-proof by any means, but way better than one off the shelf. I used a wire feed welder.

I use a Lesche, it's hard to beat for digging. Just about any of the suppliers on this website would be happy to sell you one. They run about 50 +, but again they are awesome, and you only need to buy one for the rest of your life.
