I just tried out my new safari. I've detected on and off for a year or so, with a cheaper model and borrowed a friend's much better model for the beach. I'm from Ohio in the country. I tested things out with various objects on the ground and got familiar with the range of numbers and especially where each object showed up. Tried all four factory modes. Problem is this: the detector is "hitting" practically all the time. I watch the screen and most hits are in the ---range but it indicates that I could dig just about anywhere although the depth varies. Ground is really dry and hard and the site is an old homestead. There is a lot of trash, but with my cheap Garrett Bounty Hunter I had a lot of finds. I guess what I'm asking is should I turn the sensitivity down ? I use the noise cancel. I just don't know when to dig because I could dig every few inches. Once in a while I can move a few feet without getting a hit. I'm basically a newbie but I basically hav e a handle on things. Tell me I'm stupid but I just want an answer

Hi opie and Welcome to the boards!
Don't despair. The Safari isn't an easy machine to learn. In my own case, I had been away from the hobby for a decade+ and it took me about 50 hours with the Safari until something went click in my brain and good things began to happen (trash went way down and finds went way up). The best advice I can give you is to use the machine, probably with lots of discrimination until you are more comfortable with it. Personally, I'd recommend masking out everything below copper pennies. After you gain confidence, you can open up the nickel range and then beyond that. Around here, if I leave it wide open, the machine constantly sings about how much trash is under my coil.
That said, you are in horrendous conditions. Baked ground + trashy site = lots of hot work, sore wrist and a impressive pile of trash at the end of the day. Your depth is also probably varying because it is seeing targets at many different depths. Again, the trashy site.
Noise cancel is rarely the problem. At least, I have never seen it be a problem in my own use. Sensitivity may be too hi as you suggested. Certainly try reducing it for a while and see how it works. I think that in combo with some generous discrimination would help. And don't underestimate the dry ground being a factor too- imo folks WAY underestimate how helpful saturated soil can be.

The standard coil is not good for trashy areas.
Make sure the Trash density is set to "High", Lower the sensitivity to around half of max and disc out small iron and/or notch out specific items that you don't want to detect. Slow down the sweep speed.
Maybe get a small 5 x 8 DD.
I purchased a 5 x 8 Rif Smart Coil from Ebay and it is not working at all so don't get one of those.

Hello opie welcome to the forum, the information everyone has posted here is great. I would also give auto sensitivity a try. When you hear a sound that you like wiggle the coil over it and let the ID numbers catch up and go slow. Trust the numbers the Safari's id numbers are very accurate.

Thanks guys for your advice on my new safari.You all made me feel not quite "so silly". Haha. Actually went with my mentor today and he gave me some of the same advice and IT WORKS!! I tried not to panic and just hunted in the coin and jewelry modes with factory settings on all others except turned the sensitivity down. Seems much better. Found a couple modern coins but I know old stuff is there on this hundred year old homestead. Can't wait till next time. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again, but my computer literacy is limited. Hope you guys don't charge for advice.Haha Thanks again.
