Questions about making your own coil materials and shield etc.

I am interested in experimenting with making some coils for my PI.
Rather than re-invent the wheel, I am hoping someone who has made a coil can share what he used to shield it with and what material was used to contain the coil as well.
PVC seems to be calling me for the frame work, and many items seem possible for the faraday shield material.....
Hope someone can help out here as I am ready to GO!
