Questions on buying a new (used) Explorer [warranties/locations/...]

BlackX

Are the Minelab warranties (regular and extended) transferable? I'm seeing a some Explorers listed on eBay saying 2 or 3 years left on the warranty.

Are there other good locations to look for a used Exp. II or SE other than eBay? Prices seem to be a bit higher than I recall last time I'd looked.

On the classifieds here, is there any mechanism for security? I presume most folks here (as elsewhere) are honest but wonder how that aspect is handled if it's not someone well known.

I'd like an SE at this point since I'm coming from a Sovereign and the new tone added on the SE sounds like it would match what I'm used to on the Sov. But for the couple hundred difference in price, I could pick up a few more goodies if I get a II (like a Sun Ray probe (a necessity IMO), extra coil, etc.) I've been reading a lot (including the manuals for both the SE and the II) and wondered what folks here think about the difference between the two.

(I know I have more questions but I'm blanking at the moment and I'm trying to get this posted quickly before I leave for home (where my computer has recently died so no net access there at the moment).)

Thanks,
_Rich_

My new SE warranty says its NOT transferrable. Try contacting the dealers on the minelab site. Im here in Quartzsite, AZ and the dealer here has a New SE and a used explorer II. Also, i beleave most of the dealers just went thru a price increase... ouch. I got mine new SE from Gerry's detectors here on the net.... great guy to deal with at a very fair price.

No Rich, Minelab warranties are not transferable. I'd stay away from those Ebay traders. Keep an eye on the classified forums and post a want to buy ad on them. You can check the feedback forums on some members. You can save money by buying a used machine but you will be giving up the security of the warranty. Both the Explorer II and the Explorer Se are really good detectors. I prefer having the newest technology. I want every advantage I can get when I hunt.

warranty not transferrable. i had just posted a few post down about an explorer xs with explorer ll housing selling for $425 at treasure depot. i swing an xs myself and have never seen the need to upgrade. the xs is an awesome detector and you would save around $300 over a ex ll (you could get a sunray probe and another coil with that).better hurry though, the ad said it would be going to ebay soon if no takers ....hh....jb

After dealing with many folks here on the forum, my guess is that if you bought a detector from an original owner here they would help you with warranty (acting as if they still owned it) in the event there was a problem. There are a lot of deals that come through here from a lot of very nice guys. I have found honesty in each deal I was involved in.

I agree, I bought a used exp ll that is a lemon from an ebay trader.

WHOOAA, WAIT A MINUTE, you are the ebay trader I bought it from.

I would gladly return it and trade it for a NEW x-terra 50 (about the same price), just so I'd have something that is useable.

I bought a used II and I couldn't reach the person that sold it to me used to have him send it in for warranty work. So I had to pay to have it fixed. Be careful is all I am saying.

Personally.....for the kind of money a quality machines like the Minelab's require, I'd buy a new one from a top notch dealer and not a used one unless I knew the person selling it. Reason I say that is because some of the guys I've seen over the years are HARD on their equipment..IMHO

I bought a used SE on this site for $850. I'm happy with the transaction. I believe I'm under warranty.
