Quite embarrassing

Dancer

Well-known member
Early on in my hunting, back around 2002. I got offered to hunt around a old farm house before it was knocked down. At the time I was using my new Garrett Gti 1500. Started in the front not much, did find a Wheaty some copper Lincoln's and the usual crap. Better luck in the back ran into a Silver Rosy. Not much going on till I spotted a few old abused Apple trees. Didn't take long got a good signal, not all that deep, maybe 6-8 inches. Digging down a ways hit some decaying wood, turned out to be about the size of a shoe box. Real sweet signal with something rattling around in there. Gotta tell ya, I was getting rattled too. Carefully opened the box and dumped the contents. Out slid some mangey fur, a pile of cat bones and a Silver tag with. "Fluffy" stamped on it. I could feel the heat of embarrassment and guilt shooting up my neck. I Dug up Fluffy !! No one around, but it seemed like a hundred eyes were on me. Put everything back as best I could and got outta there.

OHH NO, not Uncle Bill!!! Or Aunt Martha........ When in doubt, dig up the whole family...................

About 1980 I read a Carl VonMueller book on treasure hunting where he mentioned that crooks sometimes would bury their loot near Monuments or in parks knowing that if they got caught, their loot would be safe until they were out of prison. Skip ahead to about 1985 and I'm detecting in an old, rundown park in the mountains of California. I got a really good signal right in the center of a triangle of three pine trees about ten feet apart. I dug a plug and the target was deeper so I opened the hole a bit and dug a little deeper. I hit something hard and as I cleared some of the dirt I saw it was glass. I kept opening the hole and soon realized it was the glass lid to an iron pot. Thru the lid I could see a goldish color inside. Boy my heart started pounding. I got enough dirt removed that I could remove the lid! Inside I found the bones and some fur of what must have been someones pet cat. That memory is as clear today as it was back then. If nothing else, its a memory you'll have for years and something you can share with others 35 years from now. You can always change your user name to Cat Digger?

Sven, mother of God, where did you 'dig up' that family photo? The stuff of nightmares.....

Sven, I just got over a bout with pneumonia. I think some of those "people" were in my night mares and hallucinations. Scary!

Sheesh, you guys! Here I was thinking I’d get to nurture my detecting addiction over lunch hour and check out the forum. I’m about ready to puke just reading this.... anyways, yes, I agree Dancer, you handled that well and She (fluffy) will probably sleep better now after having received a little affection.
