hi hunters ,
I to have found Gold jewellery without regular numbers like 585,,,375... 750 ?? etc but instead they display symbols and shapes stamped on the inside or outsides the rings ?:confused:
Often the stamps on the outsides of the rings / pieces can wear away with daily toil , alas so many times I am left wondering what K value my find could be ??:wiggle:
I tried a local " gold buyer Honest John " !! who tried to rip me off saying that the Signet ring was 14K when you could see the slightly worn 750 stamp !! BANDIT !!! :punch: So because of HONEST JOHN I am considering buying myself a gold and Jem testing kit so I can test the items for myself !! :thumbup:
Is acid testing the best form of testing the K value coz I have seen ( Mizar ) ? testers but I seek fellow hunters advice :please:
Does anyone know of any websites that can help to explain the symbols and shapes that I mention to help me I.D the carat value of my LOOOOOOOT !!:help:

Hi : tonyweston

The # 583, 375, 750... you see on gold, is a value K of the gold. 583 parts/1000 or 58.3% gold

1000 is 100% pure gold
24 K is 100% pure gold

So 24 X 583 / 1000 = 14 K

375 = 9K
750 = 18 K

hI Serge ,
sorry I think you misunderstood me my friend ? I know about the numbers 375 etc because we do use some of those hallmarks in England .
Alas its the symbols with in shapes = ovals , triangles + squares etc that confuse me. !! Then to make it even harder to read they stamp the symbol on the outside edge of the ring were it can wear away with everyday toil and manual labour !!
I think that Im going to have to invest some

Yes sorry Jerry I am the one having probleme with my english.

Yes i wish you get answer, i am interest to about the Marks

ever hear of a ring marked 925 0n the out side it is very small and had to use a loop to find it it also has 11 diamond looking stones in it jewelry said it was plated

Since I have found thousands of rings and never have found a sterling ring with diamonds. (probably out there) I have found plenty of gold plated sterling rings. One of the last rings I found said 14K gold shell!! Ok another word for plated. I have even found rings stamped 14K that were absolutely NOT gold. There used to be lots of crooks in the old days also.

Silver plated rings are out there but not many it seems like. Mostly gold plated copper or brass. I hardly ever trust the markings on old rings.
