Rare coin find with a 705.

It seems that the 705 has notched up another good find for one very lucky Aussie X-Terra user. It has been reported on another couple of forums and I have spoken on the phone earlier this week to someone that has seen the coin in question. It's a Holey Dollar. From what I understand, there is only around 350 known to exist today from a one shot run of 40 000 back in 1812 (1813 stamped on the inner part of the coin). These coins were the first Aussie currency coins that we had, made from Spanish 8 Reale coins. The centre was punched out, creating a second coin of less value called a Dump. That coin is about the size of a sixpence. ( I got lucky enough to see both these coins together a few months back.) They were taken out of circulation in 1822.
And folks go out over here with gold machines all the time in hope of snagging that retirement nugget! Barkin' up the wrong tree if you ask me.:lol:

Wow a rare find alright, not much chance of me finding one on this side of the ditch then.Thats the great thing about detecting you never can predict what will be next........

Ahhh! but with the Goldfields they have the best of both World's A few good coins including Gold Sovereigns have been found on the Goldfields along with good nugget's and with Gold Detector's. Makes me envious.

What a great find....if I got to choose one coin to find before I finally gave the game away, it would be the Holey dollar. (Forget the 1930 Penny or a gold sovereign) You're right Mick, the Holey dollar is much rarer than anything else in Australia....Holey dollars were Spanish American dollars (as you said, pieces of 8 Reales). The Holey dollar was given the value of Five Shillings, and the Dump, fifteen pence. They were introduced by Governor Macquarie in an attempt to stop the Australian currency from being taken from the colony by traders. Gov. Macquarie introduced harsh penalties for anyone found trying to take the coins out of the colony or melting them down to get the silver. They are an integral part of our monetry history, and, as you said, so few of them remain. Whover found it has got the find of a lifetime, literally.

Kenny,

Kind of the opposite I hear....this is the story as I heard it :

Apparently it has a distinct but not major pick mark in it from a previous hit.
the coin was was found against a tree trunk.
From that it was deduced that one of the 100's of single minded gold detectorists who frequent this old goldrush area found it some time ago and thought it was just an ordinary washer.
What do some people do with their junk ?
- Throw it againgst a tree trunk !
They will be sorry if they remember that occasion. :stars:
Probably worth well over $100K ( 150k ?)

I understand. I hate to admit it. But there are times my pouches are full of junk. I'm 1/4 mile from my car. I dig a big piece of junk. I'm not burring it! I lay it against a tree so others will see it right off. Since I dig everything but iron my pouches fill pretty quick. I would be happy with $100,000
