When cleaning clad and new cents in a tumbler, what else should be used besides aquarium gravel and water? Any other chemical... baking soda, pumice, soap, etc? Average length of tumbling time for clads and cents? All help appreciated.

Just got done with a batch of pennies that have been waiting to be cleaned for over year. I use a couple drops of regular dishwashing soap ,water and the aqarium gravel or pea gravel. I let them run 1 - 3 hours depending on how bad they are. Quarters etc. about 30 min. - 1 1/2 hours or so. Found out i had some wheats and some pennies in the 60s. I was happy.

James and Bob,
Thanks for your answers. Gives me a starting point to work with. Have a couple of years worth of the new stuff and figured I'd help out the US Mint and put it back in circulation.

As you are saving you coins for a tumbling, store the pennies in container with water. That way they will already have been soaking and will clean up much better.

This may not help RonnieB (sorry Ronnie) but if you folks have a Harbor Frieght in your areas, keep a look out for a sale on tumblers. I bought mine not long back for $20.00 bucks. I have seen them being sold for close to a hundred bucks in other trade papers.
