RE Guvners note on the Minelab falsing issue........

......my advice don't bother with coil covers....period. I've used a huge variety ofdetectors, since 1974 and the coil cover is simply a waste of money and causes lots of problems. Go ahead and use your coil as it is....I've yet to wear out a coil through use...unless you actually are "scrubbing' the ground which with today's detectors would be simply foolish. My frined has been usuing the orginal Sovereign since it came out with the original coil, he's retired and hunts at least 30 hours a week... it will take him another ten years to wear out his coil. Coil plastic is tough and coil covers in my opinoin are simply " add on profit" for the dealers!!!

I hope it dont start a war, but I have seen a coil cover wear out in less than a year on the Explorer XS II, now if they did not have a cover it would be costing them over $150 instead of $15. This person and many other I see that do so great with the Explorer are not holding the coil off the ground, but actually scrubbing the ground for them to get those deep targets.
Now in the last 33 of detecting I have wore out many coil covers and some detectors I sell before I wear them out, but I always uses a cover to keep my coils clean and most will come off so easy to be cleaned it only takes a few minutes to do this. The only coil cover that is hard to get off was the one on my 8 inch coin search coil and when I got it off it was very clean as it fits so tight nothing seem to get into it.
Some like them and some dint, I do and they have saved me of buying new coils many of times.

the cover is more trouble than it is worth. However, it is standard practice to eliminate "air" on the Explorers, experienced hunters virtually certainly scrub the ground with the coil, so some discussion of protection methods is in order.

I've seen a few folks use paste-type epoxies to skim coat the bottoms of their coils, and of course that's a great idea, until of course someone uses JB Weld to do the skimming!

(The JB Weld tube that says "Steel" (the black resin) does contain finely ground steel (iron?) that is most definitely magnetic!)

Others seal the edges of the cover to the coil with RTV, but it seems silly to expect this seal to be permanent, and how much of a hassle is it to remove when it does need to come off (like when the relatively soft coil cover wears out itself)?

Nice thing about an epoxy skim coat is you can get an idea of how much actual wear it taking place, and add a thin layer when it starts to wear down.
