I'd like to buy my young, recently married adult son a detector as a gift. He lives in the SW Pennsylvania area where the original National Road was built. And he has a lot of free time on his hands since his wife works evenings. He really can't afford to buy a detector at this point. I don't want to spend more than $600. I'm an EX II user and have no idea what else Minelab has to offer in that $$ range. I'll check ebay for buys but I want the best bang for the buck. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have been watching ebay for a couple of months with an eye on Explorer XS prices. It is not uncommon for a used XS to sell for under $600. They typically range in the $575 to $675 range. Since you are use to the II, you may be able to coach him a little making his learning curve easier.
