Art is right about small targets like nuggets. I'm guessing that a nugget would probably need to be at least the size of a pea for the sov to pick it up and then only if it's not real deep.
I have a Sovereign XS and it chokes on moderate concentrations of black sand so using it in the gold fields would be absolute hell.
It's not acceptable as a nugget detector. On the bright side it's an awsome coin and jewelry machine. I love mine and I wouldn't trade it for any other detector (well maybe the new Sovereign GT).
