OK, you already know about the wiggle. Now, the Explorer doesn't like air in between it and the soil, so try to keep the coil to the ground at all times. Another very important issue with the beast, is that you need to set the sensitivity at a perfect setting, ok some guy's can deal with a lot of the chatter when they have their sen. set high at 26 to 30 or even at max 31, but I find that you will not lose any depth with the Explorer set at 20 to 26. The trick to having the Explorer run in a stealth mode is to have that threshold hum as steady as possible. I've gotten Silver at 12" to 14" with the Sen. at 20. Remember the best mode so far as I can see, is ferrous if you are hunting for a mix bag of goodies, buttons, brass, copper, silver, gold...
Another very important task that has to be mastered is to have that coil evenly with the ground when you are swinging, also that you swing or scan very slowly. I find that if you are swinging your coil back and forth and you hit a vine or a stump of a bush or something to stop your swing, you will get false signals. So it's important to have a steady hum at all times and that swing is not uninterrupted by any objects.
If your swing becomes interrupted, try scanning that area again after you remove the object. If you can't get the object out of the way, try scanning over the top by lifting the Explorer a couple of inches and this is the exception to the rule of having your coil to the ground.
We ask ourselves so many times, but I just scanned that area before or yesterday and yet I got a relic or silver from there today, what in the world is happening.
Well, Joe-G I don't like telling too many secrets, but I'll tell you and I know of only one other person in the two forums that has figured out why we find coins and other goodies in hunted out parks. The answer is... Angles, the direction in which you approach a target. Remember you asked about coins being on edge and how do they sound, well, if you hit a coin on edge at the wrong angle, you may hear it, or you may not, most likely your not, because, if you swing and that coin is laying on edge from right to left and up and down and you are swinging from right to left, you may hear what we call a false signal...it's not a solid signal and it sounds horrible, and most of us just keep swinging.
Now if you are swinging that coil slowing in an area and redoing that area from different angles is when you are going to hear that coin or button or token that is sitting up and down in the soil. The deeper the coin or target, the harder it is to pick it up in a way that it's going to come in as a strong signal.
Remember, you can go to Iron Mask to hear the target more clearly when you hunt with these programs, only be careful as you may hear the other targets around the one you picked up in the blacken program.
That's where the wiggle comes in, in very trashy areas and the coin is on edge. You need to find the right angle the target is laying and when you lock in, bring your coil straight up to hip height and down again, right to the spot where you got the signal and wiggle, and I guarantee you a keeper.
Sometimes, and sometimes it happens a lot depending on the soil and how the target falls back in a hole, is that the signal you got and it may have been a strong one, is no longer heard. This happens when you just miss the target and the target falls in the hole even deeper, or you break the halo that is created by the target when you remove a top layer of soil, you lose the radio frequency in connection to the target, that's why some people like to hunt with pulse machines. All you need to do when you lose a strong signal, is put on the pin point on and if you get that tone from the pin point the target is still there and you need to carefully dig deeper and around to get it out.
I've had silver coins come out of the hole and could not hear it in the pile nor in the hole, so spread the top soil out and you'll be surprise how the coin is right there in the pile of soil you dug up, a hint, it happens to gold too at the beach. If it's not in the pile, pin point in the hole and dig deeper and widen the hole till you take it out.
Another trick I use at both the beach and the park, is to set up two programs. One for Gold and one for Coins... Start with a Gold program, by collecting every piece of Gold you have at home that you have found. Now the trick is that you need to be somewhere where your Explorer's hum must be steady at all times and you can't, repeat, can't receive other signals from anywhere. Go out side, check the ground for any possible metal and remove it... Bring down the Sensitivity to 12 or 16 because you are not looking for depth as the gold is going to be right under your coil and the lowering the sen. setting will stop the Explorer from picking other metal or frequencies from out side radios, planes, hand radios etc... you need to go the learn mode and blacken the smart find LCD display entirely. Go to the cursor sizes and use the medium size cursor for small gold, and the small cursor for large gold.
Place each piece of Gold down and hit the check or learn button and slowly pass the coil across the target you want the Explorer to learn, when you receive the signal and the you see the box size cursor you choose in the area that Gold registers, hit the check button again, and that type of gold will come up when you are hunting the beach, now go to the next piece of Gold and place it down, and check if the Explorer is detecting it, if it is then you don't need to have the Explorer learn that particular piece of Gold.
The trick is to run as many different types of Gold 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K, and program them into the Explorer. You need to check and see if all the different size rings will be detected, Chains, Bracelets with different size links, different size medallions, pendent's, ear rings.... OK, OK,...why are you doing this, Well, because their are hundreds of different pull tops at the beach and only about 20% of them sound like the Gold you are looking for, so if you can knock out 80% of the Pull Tops that don't register as Gold, but as Pull Tops you'll dig 80% less holes and hunt for more Gold and believe me, you'll find more Gold in less time...
Important (PROVIDING THE GOLD IS THERE TO BE FOUND)
Remember to check and see if the Explorer is or isn't picking up the Gold piece before you set it to learn. Keep in mind that at the Beach you will be digging Pull Tops that register like Gold, but not as many as you did before. When you have a low tide, you only have that low tide for just so much time, and you'll have more time to find gold than unwanted garbage. You'll also be digging a lot of foil, because most small rings, chains, and bracelets come in that range.
The Coin program works the same way, but instead of Gold, you are going to let the Explorer learn tp detect Silver, Copper, Nickel, and Tokens if you wish. Again, you'll need a vast variety of coins and if you don't have some of them, you'll do well to buy some in a coin store or E-bay... Hint, the coins don't have to be in great shape, so you don't have to spend a lot of money. You'll need to get some Large Cents, Shield Nickel, Three Cent pieces, V Nickels, Buffalos, War Nickels, Indian Pennies, Seated Liberties, Capped Bust, any coin you want to find in the field, you need to program the Explorer to learn them, but remember to check first to see if the Explorer is already detecting the coin and if it is, you don't need to program that particular coin or coins. Lastly, remember to save the program by hitting the blinking save box at the bottom right, because if you reset your Explorer, you are going to lose the program, also if Mind Lab Repairs your Explorer and replaces your digital board you'll have to do it again, but it's worth it.
These programs are very good in that since you are not using a set up discrimination from the set up box and avoiding the use of the filter after filter. The Explorer will pick only those target's which you taught it to, and may get a little boring from not hearing the whole spectrum of targets you are use to hearing in the field, because many of the other targets are disdriminated from the program, just make sure to have a steady threshold hum at all times, because I've always made very good finds when I hunt in what I call when the Explorer is running very smoothly without pops and bangs and low rumbles when out in the field, in a stealth mode.
Well, good luck and remember, if you are programing your Explorer and you get to many different cursors coming in for one coin or piece of gold, it means you are picking up either other metals or frequencies and you'll need to either lower the Sen, or move to a more stable environment where your not picking up false signals. I guarantee you'll make so great finds as these program are great when you don't have much time to hunt, say after work, or at low tides. As I found this Gold I kept programing all the Gold that the Explorer had not learned and I continued to find more and more Gold each year. Remember that you'll find more Gold at busy beaches that are located at Inlet and Bays, than in open beaches at the Sea... The water is much more calm and easier to hunt.
