Re:Tejon beach settings

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I've posted on this site, but I am going to the beach in May, and wanted to get thoughts on optimal setting for beach hunting with the tejon. I have used it a lot for relic hunting of course and love it, but I'm not sure about how to run it at the beach. Heard running it in dry sand is best. Thanks!

If it is a fresh water beach, have at it just like your normal hunts.

If it is a salt water beach, a bit different. Set it up like you normally do for dry sand. If there are lots of black streaks, redo the ground balance over the black areas when working in those areas, then reset the ground balance again when getting out of the black streak areas. If you don't see any black sand you are is good shape to just hunt the dry sand. Still, check ground balance frequently because if there is moisture down a couple of inches in what looks like dry sand, you may need to adjust to it.

To work towards the damp sand, you can run a little bit of discrimination to help eliminating sounding off on the salt. Can also turn the sensitivity down some. Can go as high as about 2/3 of the way from iron to foil marking to help eliminate the salts and down to 6 or 7 on the sensitivity. Any higher on the discrimination and you just kill response in the range where smaller gold is. Once you get past where the sand is damp down a couple inches and is really wet, the Tejon does not ground balance to the wet salt and you loose a lot of depth even when adjusting with a little discrimination.
Enjoy your trip when you get there.

The Tejon will go very deep in the dry sand.If you start to get near the wet you will notice the detector getting noisy.I would not get to far into the moist sand not unless i had a very small DD coil to cut the salt. You should do good in the dry sand.Hunting in the wet sand is special situation that requires special equipment.Look for deep sandy areas behind the bars. Some have volly ball courts behind them which can hold lots of rings.Your advantage will be the deep dry sand areas.
