Real Faint 46 ID's

I've learned not to ignore the real faint high pitched 46 Id's that sometimes bounce into -8. Everytime I've digged a real faint 46 so far it has been an interesting, deep non-ferrous target. A brass button, mercury dime and what seems to be a round piece of lead with holes in it have been 46 targets I've dug. It seems as though instead of the target ID being lower than it should, it ups it to 46. I'm using the 9" 3khz coil Anyone else notice this?

With the 3 kHz digger coil every 46 I have dug has been a bottle cap. Can't recall if any of those were faint signals though. I've only been doing this a short time so I still dig just about everything.

I use the 9inch 3khz a lot. I have had faint 46 be good targets also. While relic hunting with other coils I have deep -8 's be three ringers over a foot deep.
I'm glad to see you are finding some good stuff with your 705.

Like nja82 every 46 I've gotten has been a bottle cap. Maybe its the Washington soil. I dig them anyway because others, like you, have had them be good targets.
I try very hard not rely on numbers for complete target id.

I think you are right bill. I think it is our soil. I found a section of an old parking lot that was mildly mineralized and bottle caps started coming up as low conductors...6/8/10's. Most of the time I'm in high mineralization and the bottle caps ring at 46 just about every time

Most of the time when I get a 46, cut my plug and flip it over then rescan the hole, I get nothing. That's when I know its a cap. I still track it down with my PP so I can remove it. Silver dimes usually ring in at 44. I find so few silver quarters that when I do they're a surprise and I haven't paid any attention to their numbers but someone here said that they pick up quarters in the 46 bin so I keep on digging.
On the east side here my GB numbers are usually under 20, how about you, nja82?

17 is usually about where I run in Spokane so maybe it doesn't vary that much through the state. I kind of thought it would be different.

Hey, BillF and nja82, I live near Longview, Wa. and use a X-Terra 70, my GB is between 13 and 17.

I live on harstine island in the south sound. My GB numbers are all over the place. Most places I've detected are down in the single digits, 7-10. Then there are other places in the teens to low 20's. I've even run into the occasional low mineralization in the 40's. I've definitely learned not to rely on TID numbers. They seem to vary depending on where I'm hunting. I usually listen for those good solid repeatable tones. I will be ordering the MF 10.5 DD coil soon. I'm hoping that will help with our soil conditions. The stock concentric doesn't seem to like our soil. It works but I think the DD will be better. I have had good luck with the digger coil but feel I am missing deeper targets. I got the LF digger coil for some of the high trash areas I have been hunting. It works great but haven't dug a coin past 3 inches with it yet.

I bought the med freq 10.5 DD from a member here. I really like it, it seems to work very well in trashy areas also. But it does tend to get heavy so I use a sling. I really like the sling it was cheap and easy to use but they aren't a sponsor anymore so I cant mention the name. If you think you might want to know shoot me a PM.

Yes it's working beautifully, Thanks again.

So when you guys are getting the faint signals that end up being a deep target is it a good repeatable signal with the depth meter maxed out? I have had this happen a few times and dug very deep but was unable to find anything. Gave up on them and filled the hole. Now I'm wondering if I should have kept digging. One was a wrap around signal...i think. And the others I believe we're 46's. I may have to go back to a couple of these and give them another try.

When I am relic hunting. I dig the hole and lose the signal. I keep digging and it is usually a really deep bullet. I'm talk Bing around 13 inches. I've learn there is usually no such thing as a ghost signal.

Thanks 7cw. I figured I left a few things in the ground. Unfortunately I was in an area I didn't want to dig too big a hole. Private property I had permission to detect. Wanted to make sure I left the property better than it was when I got there.

If I am coin hunting in a yard I usually don't dig that deep. But when I am civil war hunting in fields I will dig as far down as I have to. Found some good targets that only gave faint one way signals and when I cut plug I lose target. But I keep digging and eventually find it.

Due to the Xterra having proportional audio, I'll dig any good sounding repeatable 46 regardless of how faint it is.
Actually, I'll dig anything that sounds good.

Good tip OL. As a beginner I'm learning to dig anything that sounds good. When in doubt I just dig. This has paid off twice with two gold rings.

Heck, it doesn't always have to sound that good. A couple of times now I had high tones that made me stop, they sound a touch scratchy which usually turns out to be a junk but out pops a merc dime. Must have had junk close by.

That's it! It made you stop!
There is just something about a good hit. It doesn't need to be perfect, it only needs to have a sound that stops us.
