Hi All,

As a long time member and poster to this forum, I'm going to ask a question that may seem strange.

I have owned the original Explorer, and the Sovereign. I want to jump back in and buy another of each.

I mostly do allot of school and park hunting. However, I do some hunting of old farm houses, ghost towns.

Heres my question: Should I up grade to the Explorer II or should I just find someone selling an older original Explorer?

On the issue of the Sov, I had an XS, and loved it. Should I up grade to the GT? Or, again should I just buy an used XS?

The reason I got rid of the two unit's that I had was simply medical. I had busted up my left arm several years ago and I thought at the time that I needed to go to a light weight detector. I'm now strong enough to Handel the heavier gear.

Jim,
IT depends on if you are comfortable with used detector's. If you already understand each of the detector's that you mentioned.....then I would try and find those rather than starting all over. Use what you know.....It will save money, and time.

Joe,

OK, if neither of those were to play a part,(time and money) then what would your answer be?.

I usually buy used detectors from this forum. I have had a supper time of it. I get to try detectors and not pay full price.

Back to my original subject: Should I up grade?

Go for the older Explorer XS. It will save you money and there really isn't much difference in the Explorer II. Unless you want a warranty, this is the way to go. But if you do want to have a warranty on the machine just to be safe, Contact R&L Enterprises for a price quote from Rick (ND). You may be glad you did. His banner is located on the White's Forum. You may even want to send him an email since he really knows the Soveriegn XS model and the GT series. One of his favorite detectors. Hope this helps you out.

Jim, I have the Explorer II and really like the dual-digital that shows you the ferrous and conductive numbers vice only the conductive like the XS. There are other improvements too, like the carbon fiber lower shaft (stronger and lighter) and then there's the warranty and newer software. But if you're a tones-only guy and none of the rest is important to you than fine, go with the XS.

As for the Sovereign, I would get the Elite. Because it will be functionally just like your old one but have the advantage of the much better (IMHO) Tornado coil and the improved and lighter control box. Plus it has the 2nd frequency band which comes in REAL handy for hunting around others because if you're banging on them or they on you then you can switch bands and all is well. I haven't used the GT but it sounds like a few nice improvements. But if familiarity is what you want, get an Elite.

My two large cents...

If money or time has no part in the decision.....Then go for the upgrade.

Both detector mentioned have 2 yrs warranty(sometimes 4 yrs). And with this you will not have to worry for some time to come.
Other Plus's....

Explorer II:Upgraded software, Change of lower rod(carbon fiber), middle rod(no sliding out) configuration, Less arm rest breakage, The headphone jack changed to 1/4 instead of 1/8, detector stand under the rear.

Sovereign GT: Dual channel noise cancel(frequency shift), Straight shaft(comfort), Rescaled meter(option), Lighter weight coil(tornado), Metal arm cup w/cover, Very similar to the older soveriegn...with only minor changes like the addition of the disc,all-metal,pin-point toggle switch.

Hope this helps

I just answered his post on the Sovereign forum and I too recommend the XS or the XS2 if he wants to save some money, but the GT is a bit better I feel if money is not a problem. The only 2 Sovereigns I didn't care for was the original and the Elite. The Original I didn't like the tones and didn't think it has the depth the XS had. The Elite they turned the controls around and confused many that were used to the controls of the older Sovereign plus I didnt think the depth was as great either for us that know the Sovereign. The targets sounded deeper than the actually were.
From your post of Saturdays find you are still doing well I see. I was suppose to meet Corey at Dickey, but had other things to do again. I just hope I can get out soon and find something as it has been a while since I got out and found anything.

Rick
