relics how do I stop or slow down corrosion ?

I found a few good old relics this year but some of them are very heavily corroded with rust pitting the iron underneath and fragmenting it. Is there a way to slow down the rust but preserving the historic value of the piece ? Thanks.

Should I even try to get the surface rust off ?
