Hi folks ! Got back last week from a 2 week stay at the new Wyndham Viva playa Dorada in puerto Plata. Went down there with my son and wife and frankly this must have been one of the nicest vacations we ever had.
Altough i didn't do mutch detecting for many reasons. First the wife... who wasn't too happy to see me take half of one suitcase for the detector. Also i had a problem with my detector.
My biggest worry was to know if the Tiger shark would work in salt water. Well at my first trial, i was real glad to see it worked as well as soft water, especially on salt water mode. Only problem was the very taugh surf that prevented me from any water detecting that day. So I resolved myself on doing dry sand and only found a few domenican peso and two canadian pennies.
There is a lot of people on the beach, a lot ! But since they are all in an all inclusive resort, none of them carry change and many have left their jewels at home. But I saw a lot of people with rings and gold chains.

On my second exit i was faced with a major problem, my coil probably leaked and started to emit multiple falses signals... to a point it was virtually impossible to detect in water... what a pain ! I need to ship 3 of my coils to Tesoro now, all probably leaking from the same place, the wire connector on the coil. Too bad because i found a place secluded from the surf where a lot of people were swimming. Argg... I raise my hat to you guys, salt water detecting is a lot harder than expected. Since the area to cover are so large, it's real taught to hit any signal and i get discouraged very fast !
Oh well, since i was on the beach... i played on the sand a little with my son :

During my two week stay, I only saw one guy doing the dry sand with his son... didn't recognized the detector, probably a chineese model. There is also a local guy doing the water detecting with a snorkle and mask. He found a gold ring right in front of the hotel and tryed to sell it right away to the tourists. That is probably where he can get the best price for his finds.
So if you ever plan a visit down there, feel free to bring the detector, nobody had any problems with that!
