Return on investment....has your detector paid for itself?

I bought my Garrett 2 years ago this month and being my first detector, I'm a little shy of getting my return on investment. But its been a fun hobby and wish I started detecting years ago. I'm still looking for that diamond ring, gold coin or something other that will bring me over to the plus side.

I gota about 1/3 the way there in the past 2 yrs actually 1 1/2 yrs
sooner or later ill be EVEN but till then it IS fun....
nad ya never know what might pop out of the gound!!!

My 1350 cost me about $600.00. Last year I rolled up $350.00 just in clad. I also have some rings .925 silver and some silver coins that I did not sell. This year I am at $68.00 in clad, so far, so I think I will be over that milestone this hunting season. But, how do you put a value on the fun and fellowship we have in the field and on this forum?:garrett:

I stopped counting a long time ago. I have 4 detectors currently and so I cant say I have paid for them each with finds. Over the years, especially during my early zealous phase, I imagine I came close to paying for my first detectors with clad and jewelry.

I don't reckon silver coins or valuable relics into the equation. They are worth only braggin' rights until they are sold. Until then, you are out of pocket on them

I'm overzealous all the time concerning detecting. This is clad and gold jewelry that I've scrapped. These numbers are exact as of today.

Bounty Hunter Cost $104.95 Finds $124.35 (Around 5 years.)
Ace 250 Cost $212 Finds $692.78 (3 months)
GTI 2500 Cost $935.00 Finds $4775.78 and counting (2 1/2 years)

This is so easy to track if you make a decent spreadsheet. Mine does it automatically after I enter a hunt in.

Got my Ace used off of Craigslist for 150 and had it paid off in no time.
Get batteries free at work but the gas for the car eats far more money than I could ever find.
Still a very fair trade for a hobby.

:usaflag:Well since I just got my Ace a couple of weeks ago I could'nt possibly compete with those numbers. Maybe you guys should put it into categories like : The MDers who have to hold down a job..and..the MDers who have way too much free time..lol !!

It's a hobby - not a business. I didn't acquire my detectors to make money with or make a living. Looking at it from that angle takes all the fun out of it.

You can't put a price on the latter as it is priceless. Just look at all the great folks one meets here and the fun they share.

Some yes and some no. If only I could stop buying detectors for long enough, then I might actually end up in front!:poke: I've actually been good and haven't bought one in the last year, If only I can refrain for another 3 to 4 years, then I'll actually manage to get in front!

My 250 has paid for itself and then some just finding some survey pins I was looking for
on a couple of properties. Surveyors aren't exactly cheap these days.

Wow, Cwilk! I wish I had done that. The only reason I know that I paid for my sniper coil since Christmas is because I ran into a tight spot a couple of weeks ago and rolled up the coins and put $100 in the bank and sold my 3 tiny gold ring for $75 at a pawn shop. I got so excited about the coil that I would run out before work and on the weekends and the coinage kept piling up on my dresser and my computer table and even my coffee table by my recliner. And that's not counting the clean clad that I put in pocket so the missus and I could have about 2 sodas each at work. We're both at Wally World and that's about $2 a day. I've just about calmed down now but I still have a few trashy sites that everyone else avoids.
