Rifle hammer

Dick from NC

New member
We went out for a nice cool morning hunt and turned up some nice relics. Some musket balls and a hammer from a rifle, and because of the location could be confederate. I have had it cooking in my electrolysis tub since yesterday. I took it out to wire brush it, so I took some pictures. This is 140 years worth of rust not dirt. Will post some better pictures when done.

Hello Dick.

Quite a neat find. It will be interesting to see once, it's fully cleaned.

I noticed you mentioned it being in your electrolysis tub.

I presume it was just soaking and not being actually subjected to electrolytic process?

It should 'clean up' more quickly, and better if it really were put through the treatment, although getting a good electrical connection may prove quite a fiddly job!

Great find....Congrats.....MattR.UK.

WTG Dick,

Excellent find, It looks old maybe back in the black powder days.

Congrats,

This was found at one of Sherman's main river crossings. There were thousands of confederates and union through there. Found part of a lead sabot within a few feet. About a month or so back found a base cup to a Hotchkiss shell in the field just beyond. Thats why I think it could be confederate because they defended the river crossing.

I have been running it through electrolysis for a couple of days. I took one end down to metal for my connection. These field are next to a major river so flooding over 140 years was common. Subject to a lot of moisture. I'll post a much better picture in a couple of days.

I think you will find this is a shotgun hammer...what we call a dog lock..the hammer is far to the front..with muskets it's usually farther back
