Platinum markings
Written on 08/15/03 at 08:10:55 CST by AllenMI
Platinum is usually marked by:
Pt (atomic symbol)
PLAT
900 Pt
950 Pt
Iridium Plat
The numerical marking indicates fineness in thousands, i.e., the 900 represents 90% pure. Platinum is often alloyed with Iridium, for hardness.
Platinum is heavier than gold. Platinum also has less conductivity than gold, so it will register lower on a meter than gold does.
