Folks,
saw a really interesting docu-story on australian TV about Route 66 in Oklahoma. A group of Harley riders were being followed as they made their way along this highway. They stopped at a big blue whale attraction (that had seen better days) and the story also commented on the decline of tourism once the large interstate highways were built. This has led to many motels closing down with many now falling into disrepair and abandoned. I thought maybe some of these motels would be good places to detect around, Does anyone have any interesting stories about route 66? I'd like to learn more about this very interesting piece of american history

If I lived closer to Route 66 (I'm probably 200+ miles away, that's where I'd do most of my detecting. I believe it was being closed out about the time silver coinage was closed out. So, dimes, quarters, halves and dollars were silver, that's what you'll probably find there ! Antidotally, Each year Ham radio operators along Route 66, put on a cool thing called "Route 66 on the air". They mostly represent the cities in the song "Get your kicks on Route 66". For chatting with them on the radio, you qualify for a certificate to put on your wall. I personally have quite a few of their certificates. Another good bet, if you live there, are all roads in, and leading out of Nevada. Instead of tokens, gambling joints used Silver Dollars. So, every place you could stop for a snack, take a leak, or what ever, where it is dirt, is a potential silver dollar site. What do I find here in Fresno, Clads, pull tabs and Centavos..........ARGHHHHHHHHHH!
