Running the GT in A/M Mode,. when and how?

Before detector high tech I found the best search method to use was set the thing in A/M to get the faint and the strong, detect, get a hit, run the Disc knob to see what dropped out, think about it, dig it or pass it. Reverse discrimination worked real good.
Now I have the Sov/GT. Lovin it, learning it, using it 12 to 15 hrs a week. Last summer when I was trying to make up my mind on what detector upgrade would work best for me, one of the GT testers noted that sensitivity wasnt so good in A/M. In fact when hunting in Disc and going to A/M pinpoint targets sometimes disappeared. Shortly after getting my GT, searching in Disc (Disc/Notch zero) it happened to me. Pinpoint didn't see it. That was a major grabber. Some sites I was looking to do a lot of search in my favorite A/M operating mode. as soon as I learned about the GT. Since then Ive only worked sites in Disc and A/M pinpoint to locate a found target.
Recently on the other MLab forum for their new detector line a major discussion is taking place, regarding A/M mode and what it really means when operating the new breed of detectors. This brought me back to - why shouldn't I run in A/M on the GT? Why shouldn't I run in A/M pinpoint (the manual says no-no because of no grnd balancing). In Zero Disc am I missing some targets I may want to look at? Any GT operators out there running in A/M? HH Don

There are a few things that keep this from being cut and dried.

Sovs like well compacted dirt of consistent density, mineral content, and moisture......particularly in disc mode.
Can hit better than all metal or pinpoint.

All metal...not pinpoint with GT..does not hit very strong on weak targets compared to disc mode. Turning volume down lower than max appears to reduce depth quickly compared to disc mode. Makes it difficult to hear weak hits.

Dirt that has a lot of air in it ( not well compacted ) works much better in all metal than disc mode.

All metal still offers some disc value. Zinc and higher causes an upward tone shift while lower values cause a downward tone shift. Iron and rocks that will ping high in disc mode will shift up the tone in all metal. NOTE......all metal mode must be ground balanced for this to work. Will not work in unbalanced air test.

Different locations only a few yards apart can make a difference if all metal or disc will have an edge. Have seen extreme differences between the two depending on the dirt.

You can try this at a few locations.......
Hit a weak target then switch between modes. See how far you can lift the coil before losing it. This should help deciding which mode to use at that spot. Watch for higher and lower ground. Lower ground tends to be more settled and compacted (may be better in disc), while higher ground may be more "airy" and work better in all metal.

Layered moisture can also make a difference. Play with it to see how it is working.

Like I said.......nothing absolute about this. Experiment for yourself. Just takes a couple minutes.

I have always been one that finds with the Sovereign, any of the Sovereigns I will get better depth in the disc mode verses the all metal mode. I find that in the disc mode it is using the BBS of the 17 freq while in the all metal it is using only one freq they way I understand it.
Like I say I have got some deep signals I get in disc, but when I go to all metal pinpoint I find I cant get a signal on the target or get one from trash beside the actual good target.

Art has it bang to rights but I would add that I also feel that the lower audio output in all metal with the older Sovereigns misleads many into thinking their getting much less depth than in the discrimination mode. I don't know if this applies to the GT but its quite marked with my XS-2.

Same way with the GT, Brian.

Disc audio is loudest, followed by pinpoint audio, then by all metal.

You really don't want to back the audio down in all metal or you might miss some of the weaker hits, while you can back off the audio in disc to 12 o'clock without much problem if you want.

All metal just doesn't get the depth of Disc. and as usual Rick is right on..Get a deepie in Disc., switch to all metal and you will be a believer also...Remember this is in my neck of the woods and perhaps in other areas it may differ so it pays to experiment....

I knew that dry hard ground just didn't produce like moist or wet ground. I never though about ground density - loose, packed, airy. Thanks for putting me on to that Art. I'll be looking at ground structures a lot closer. Experiment in both modes thats the key.
I have noticed something about pinpoint. When running my test bed (loose sandy soil). On coin targets, good sound, meter reading 180, switch to A/M pinpoint, slow wiggle, and the meter will jump between 125 -129, except on shallow clad quarter. Do that on 180 junk targets that sound good (to me), in pinpoint, the meter is jumping all over the scale. Can a meter reading in A/M pinpoint be an indicator? I know the meter is reading 180 conductivity in Disc. But what gets it going in pinpoint. Its reading something isn't it?
Thanks Rick, Art, and others for posts on A/M

The meter does not ID in pinpoint or all metal search.

It does jump around depending on target strength. More jump equals larger or more shallow target.

124 (180 meter) or 384 (550 meter) is the matching number slaved to the tone for that meter reading. This is the default startup tone and reading in all modes.

The meter in all metal pinpoint is only reading the intensity of the signal. If the number only move a little like 120-129 you know it is deeper or a smaller target, if it is all over the place with numbers reading high and low it is a bigger or shallow target.

That is what is great about this forum as someone is always quick to answer questions.

You guys need to go scrape the frost off your windows so you can look out at the frozen ground. While I, on the other hand, use all your good tips and info trying to amass a fortune in coins. relics, and useful junk, singin and swingin in the sunshine.
It aint over until the fat lady can't shovel snow. Disc me out. Don
