Looking to pick one of these coils up and was just checking to see if anyone has run both of these?

Thanks,
Greg

i hear the s12 is not as sensitive to small targets. the 12x10 is very light too. so far the 12x10 is the best coil i've ever used. you can dig up my huge thread on this coil.

Ive had and used the S12 and actually its as sensitive as any coil available for the Sov including both Tornado coils. It has a light feel to it, not sure of the actual weight but it feels the same weight wise as the 10" tornado coil, on the rod.
I just picked up the 12X10 SEF and its has a heavier feel to it, Ive never weighed it, going by how it feels on the rod.

Please post up here if you can locate a new S12, I didnt think they were still available.(if thats the coil you choose to get)

I got my SEF from Kellyco.

Dig up my coil weight chart. The 12x10 with spray on bed liner and no coil cover is lighter than the S12, and the same weight with it on. I know somebody who has owned both coils. This person is a beach hunter. After comparing them on small targets related to jewlery they got rid of the S12.

There is no differnce in weght in the two coils if the cover is on the 12x10. 0.3 ounces heavier, but it also had sprayed on liner which would weigh about that. With the cover off it's about roughly 2.5 ounces lighter than the S12. For some reason people continue to push the myth that the S12 is the lightest coil in that size range. Many times I've had to address that.

Scroll down to the last update of the chart.

Also, note the FBS versions are heavier, so comparisons between Explorer/Etrac and Soverenge coils in terms of perceived weights won't work.

And the way I understand it Sunray goes through production runs every so often on all their coils and haven't stopped making anything. They wait for demand to build up again and then crank some out and have done that for years from what I've been told. Think I even saw the owner mention that in the Sunray forum from memory.

For park hunting I found it to be very sensitive to small targets and seperated well for a 12 inch coil. To me it was by far the best bigger coil I have used for a Sovereign, but never used a SEF 10X12 yet and it would have to really be something to beat the S-12 in my opinion and will have to try out a 10X12 when i get a chance.

I'm sure the S12 is a great coil. I know I love the S-5. That thing gets about 7 or 8" in Auto on a dime, which is about the depth any other brand detector getd with an 8 or 9" coil. Very impressive. One of these days I plan to pick up an S12 and write up a report on it to the 12x10. Would like to hear how deep on land others have dug coins with S12. Even if it can match the 12x10 I bet the 12x10 will seperate better and ruhn more stable based on how well it does compared to any coil on any machine I've ever owned thanks to it's unique field being generated.

not sure where you came up with this FBS version remark, was never mentioned as far as I can see. Greg was looking for info about the S12 and SEF 10X12 if you look at the original post.
I recently bought a new 10X12 SEF from Kellyco but have not hunted it yet, but I do have it mounted and will take it out the next time I go. I had one last year and did not like it, unstable in the wet sand/cable was to short/heavy feel to it. Wanted to try another, the one I have on my explorer is great so I thought I might have had a bad one. If you read my post I did not comment on its performance, only the feel of it. Also, the cables on them are now almost 8ft long which is a plus for those of us who wade. I dont always bring my excal along.
Why be so biased against something you havent even tried yourself? or give any opinion of it for that matter. doesnt make sense.

No arguements here, Neil. Can you explain what our beef is because I don't understand and will clearify if you can be more specific.

I too have been interested in these coils for my Excal to replace the boat anchor that's on it ......Like the original poster said ...."if anyone has run both of these?" .......This too is what I am interested in hearing about ..... I'm not sure how consistant the S-12 coil is , but I can surely say that there is a wide margin on how the 10 x 12 SEF coil runs ......I was phsyc'd when Critter metioned the razor sharp line on his coil ....THIS was my main reason for getting the 10 x 12 SEF ....Mine was not nearly as razor sharp as he mentioned , and my S-5 was clearly much sharper ....... Others mentioned that their coils were not all that sharp but still a good coil , and still others mentioned the SAME THING that Critter did , and said that theirs was like a razor .....???????....... and to add insult to injry , Neil had one that was unstable .....His story is the same story my hunting partner had with a 12 x 15 SEF ....He had to return it because it was so eratic , on his dime and then wait 4 mos for a new one !!....... I'm hoping to hear that the S-12's are more consitant .....For that , I will gladly pay the additional money , and deal wtih the additional weight ..... I have NEVER heard anything bad being said about the WOT coils except the weight difference ..... Erikk on this forum has a BUNCH of them on his machines and can use whatever he wants !!.... Jim

BTW ....Even though MY 10 x 12 was not razor sharp , it was still a great coil for the short time I used it, and it was a quiet running coil in the Salt and Black Sand ....Jim

I've used the S8 and S5 for my etrac and had great results with those coils, I did try the 10x12 for it and ended up selling that one because i thought the stock coil was about the same or better for my dirt hunting,

I have ordered the S8 so far and still deciding on the S12 or 10x12, BTW there all on back order sunray is suppose to have stock this month and kellyco has no idea, Maybe i will just test them both, Sounds like i could get one this month and the other 2-3 months later then i wont get beat up by the warden for spending money on coils lol.

I like the S-12. A good coil for coverage on the beach. It is too big for some of the iron infested beaches of NJ, but it runs very smooth on a cleaner beach. I love when a beach lets me use it.

goodmore,
That's good info for me to know .....I'm hitting the NY beaches and there is plenty of iron and STREAKS of Black sand galore !!..... If that S-12 doesn't like to handle iron well , it's not the coil for me ......Thanks for the info ....Jim
