Safari and Gold

I have a Quattro. I also have the Andy Sabisch book Mastering The Quattro In his book he made a very good statement about finding gold rings. He said in the conductive mode, he says like other detectors a lot of gold rings read and sound like pull tabs. Which makes them hard to tell the difference. But in ferrous mode, there is a different sound on gold rings that read in the pull tab zone fron the tabs tones.I have a number of gold rings that read in the pull tab zone. In air test I can hear the difference. I have not tried it in the field yet (Too cold). I would think you could do the same thing with the Safari.....Jack

Interesting, I'm going to try that out- you may have something there. Thanks for the tip, jackintexas.

I would like to think that gold rings sound different in both conductive and ferrous, BUT more so in ferrous. Pull tabs unfortunately register in a broad spectrum of I.D.'s/numbers and sounds and I think part of the reason is pull tabs have changed in style and size over the years and give different numbers and to some degree, sounds as well. Somewhere, a few months ago, someone posted a chart on one of these forums showing the different pull tab styles which I thought was interesting. There again, gold rings vary in metal content/karat and size and do vary in sound but generally give a deeper and more distinctive sound over a pull tab in ferrous sounds.
I dig a lot of pull tabs and when I do swing over a gold ring, for me, there's a slight sound different......or maybe it's just my imagination, although it has worked for me so far and so long as I keep digging rings, I'll stay with that style of detecting!!!

This subject generally sparks a lively debate! Some guys say they can tell the difference, then somebody else will step up and call BS.....I dont know...I have dug a lot of tabs, a few of them turned out to be gold..

Its a fun and good experiment to try though Jack...I try my wedding ring and a tab out in the front yard when I'm bored, they sound exactly the same!...trying to come up with just the right settings or even using the PP button, raising the coil, wiggling it or hopping it, all that stuff to see if I can find a pattern where aluminum would either drop off, break up, or hang on just a bit higher or vice versa or something...:sadwalk:

I think a guy has to have the right ears to hear the 'roundness'..even so, it would take so long in field to decide if the target is a ring or not, a guy may as well just quickly pop it and see..
Mud.

I have found 116 gold rings. Having a hard time making it 117. I have hearing aids, 82 years old and I can sure hear the difference in air test. Has anyone else tried it yet or just speculating.....Jack
