From a good friend's Facebook page; Her parents lived on Long Island and were devastated by Sandy and the flood waters. This happened on the day before Veteran's day... it's unbelievable. Spread the word.
"I need everyone's advice. (Especially those in the legal field) My parent's home flooded and on Sunday a crew began the process of tearing out the carpet, etc. They put all their belongings on the side of the house to air out. This included all the stuff they salvaged from the storm such as antiques, tvs, drawers of clothes, lamps, china, my dad's valuables buried in the drawers, jewelry, etc., basically everything valuable they have. They left the stuff against the house because the crew was coming back 1st thing this morning to tear out all the walls in the house. When they got to the house it turns out that the Parks and Recreation had sent 3 trucks to pick up everything and they went on the property and took everything that was up against the house and started breaking it apart and stuffing it into the trucks to be sent to the Lido dump. My sister stopped the last truck and they dumped out what they had but all the rest was gone. She managed to find one of his purple hearts from WW2.
I contacted the Town Supervisor and called the police (who were sending patrols last night to make sure there were no looters). There might still be some things at the dump.
My questions are: Why did they go on the property and take everything? This stuff wasn't put out to the curb for garbage like everyone else's!
Who can be held accountable for this and what rights do my parents have for recovery of their major losses???
Opinions please. They are DEVASTATED!!!!!!!!!! Thanks ♥"
I don't know how much of this is making the news, but parts of Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey were totally wiped out. My neighbors across the street just got power and heat back after 13 days. Last Wednesday / Thursday we had a Nor'easter run through and about 6" inches of snow along with high winds and cold temps. I know of MANY people that are going through some REALLY tough times. Many have lost all of their possessions and the prospect of re-building is looking dim. I know of one friend who, in spite of insurance and some flood insurance, may just have to walk away from a home that used to be worth a LOT of money. Sad.
